Cillian Murphy Comments on Voldemort Casting in HBO’s Upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ Show

Cillian Murphy has officially debunked speculations among fans about him potentially portraying Voldemort in the forthcoming HBO adaptation of Harry Potter.

During the latest edition of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, hosted by Josh Horowitz, the actor addressed the rumors on Thursday.

Murphy clarified the rumors are false. He added, “Sometimes my children show me things like that, but I assure you, I have no knowledge about it. And let’s face it, keeping up with Ralph Fiennes is a challenge. The man is an acting titan. So, best of luck to whoever takes on those roles.

Fiennes famously played Voldemort in the original Harry Potter films.

The upcoming TV series based on the Harry Potter books is scheduled to premiere on both HBO and HBO Max in 2027. Dominic McLaughlin has been chosen for the role of Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton will take on Hermione Granger, while Alastair Stout is slated to star as Ron Weasley. Each book from J.K. Rowling’s seven-book series is anticipated to have its own separate season.

Murphy offered some insights about his upcoming ventures. He’s set to appear in the Netflix movie titled “Steve,” premiering on October 3. Additionally, he’s participating in the movie adaptation of “Peaky Blinders,” entitled “The Immortal Man,” slated for a 2026 theater release. Furthermore, he’s involved with the sequel “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” which is scheduled to hit screens in January 2026.
