The 1977 Star Wars poster by Tom Jung served as a model for the Hildebrandt Brothers’ “Style B” poster, which adapted the same fundamental design but with a more vibrant color palette. This change was initiated by Fox to create a less somber, kid-friendly adaptation of the same theme. Distinctively, the Hildebrandt Brothers’ version featured R2-D2 and C-3PO in a corner, an element absent from Jung’s original work. Upon seeing this new design, Fox incorporated these droids into Jung’s initial artwork. However, it was Nick Cardy, known for his Teen Titans art, who sketched the depictions of R2-D2 and C-3PO that were added to Jung’s poster.
It’s clear that the restoration process had its boundaries, as the original creases in the posters are still present but less noticeable. The yellowish tinge has been significantly reduced, and it appears that the poster now closely resembles how it looked when it hung in movie theaters in 1977.
