Since Marvel Studios announced Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom last year, there’s been a lot of curiosity about how his character would be visually portrayed, given Victor von Doom’s iconic costume in comic book history, and its memorable design by Jack Kirby. Given that Downey Jr. is known for playing Iron Man, some speculated that Doctor Doom’s attire might resemble an altered version of the Iron Man armor in the MCU. However, it seems we now have our first glimpse at how Doctor Doom will appear, and it appears to stay true to the comic book version. The image was unveiled at a Disney Licensing Expo in China, and appears to be new artwork. According to Comic Book Movie, this image was initially shared by the X account CinXperience.

Although the overall appearance seems reminiscent of traditional Doctor Doom, there are distinct features that suggest this is fresh artwork. The intricate design on his torso appears to be an exclusive creation for this piece, rather than something seen in the comics. Furthermore, novel details on Doom’s arm gauntlets catch our eye and don’t seem to resemble any previous portrayals of the character. The belt buckle also stands out as unique. However, his mask and hood retain the contemporary style of Doctor Doom’s costume, as depicted by artists like Alex Ross and Adi Granov. If this is the new look, we can’t help but appreciate it, with minimal complaints.
At licensing events, it’s common to catch a first glimpse of eagerly awaited costumes from upcoming superhero movies. Recently, such an event unveiled Spider-Man’s costume for the movie “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”. To our delight, it seems quite similar to what we’ll see in the film. Similarly, the costume shown at a licensing event may well be Doctor Doom’s final look in “Avengers: Doomsday” set to hit theaters next year. If this is indeed the case, it could turn out to be much better than his appearance in the 2015 “Fantastic Four” movie, so let’s all breathe a sigh of relief!
