In simpler terms, the publication company No More Rulers recently released a book titled “Calder-isms,”, which celebrates the humor and insight of Alexander Calder, an American artist famously recognized as the inventor of the “mobile.” His friend Marcel Duchamp gave him this nickname. Calder’s innovative hanging sculptures introduced movement, equilibrium, and vivid colors to modern art in a unique manner that had not been explored before.
Compiled by Larry Warsh, this book gathers Calder’s thoughts from various interviews, writings, and other sources, reflecting the creative and whimsical essence that characterized his artwork. He once mused, “Why should art be confined to being static? The future of sculpture lies in motion.” In reference to titles, he playfully remarked, “A title is similar to the license plate on a car’s back.
The phrases he used often showcased his wit and perspective: “Bad taste always comes back,” and his opinion that mobiles, despite having no purpose or meaning, were simply “strikingly beautiful.” The book No More Rulers offers a revealing glimpse into the intelligent and spirited personality of an artist who significantly influenced modern sculpture, through some of Calder’s unique sayings.
