Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Legacy of the Forge review – Kuttenberg’s finest

When I started playing Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 in early 2025, I was genuinely annoyed with the combat for hours, as it seemed to be keeping me from fully experiencing and enjoying the world. However, most of these complaints eased when I discovered the riposte technique, and as time goes by, I’m forgetting my frustrations and growing fond of KCD2 instead. After completing all the quests (except for repeat battles and a few glitched objectives), I eagerly look forward to revisiting the game. Yet, Legacy of the Forge stands out from the rest of the game in terms of its unique feel.

In contrast to the Brushes of Death DLC, which mirrored the main game by offering a separate narrative and questline, Legacy of the Forge stands out. Instead of immersing yourself in a story, you’ll assume control over a forge situated on the periphery of Kuttenberg. Throughout your journey, you’ll invest a significant amount of Groschen to enhance every facet of this forge. This forge serves as an ideal home base within the game and conveniently features a fast travel point – something I wish had always been there.

Following the demise of the previous blacksmith, a fire erupted at the forge, causing the apprentices to disperse, leaving behind Magdalena, the widow. Generous Henry, embodying the spirit of a Good Samaritan, willingly offers his time and resources to restore the forge. He subsequently seeks membership in Kuttenberg’s Blacksmith Guild. Upon joining, he will frequently be assigned tasks from various other Guild Masters, customers, and the enigmatic criminal known as Ragman.

Daily tasks connected to the Blacksmith Guild and your workshop appear regularly. In certain instances, you’ll be acting on behalf of the guild as you tackle dice games, spar in duels, and engage in archery contests. On other occasions, the Ragman will task you with burglarizing houses, or you might just need to craft an axe for a nearby housewife.

The tasks may seem somewhat repetitive yet unexpected. For instance, during an archery competition, the judge mysteriously vanishes and is later discovered beaten and robbed nearby, causing a delay in the contest as Henry sets out to track down the perpetrators. Additionally, you might be tasked with extracting a tooth from a local resident, but his terror will result in Henry resolving the issue using his fists instead. The missions given by the Blacksmith Masters share similarities with those in the main game, albeit with a less complex narrative to drive both action and investigation.

In my journey, I find myself tasked with restoring the town’s grand astrological clock, a mission personally meaningful since my late stepfather once worked as an apprentice at the local forge where the clock resides. To my surprise, I stumble upon his intricate plans and sketches for the clock’s repair, abandoned before he was unfairly betrayed and forced to leave Kuttenberg. As I delve deeper into this project, I encounter the city’s blacksmiths who fondly remember my father figure under the nickname “Frisky” Martin. Through their stories, I gain a unique perspective into his youthful days in this town, though the name alone offers a hint at the lively spirit he must have possessed.

In simpler terms, the new DLC is less fast-paced compared to KCD2’s previous DLC, and it seems more suitable to be played simultaneously with the main game. With my 110+ hours of saved progress, I found the new forge quests repetitive and uninspiring as they were the only significant tasks left. However, visiting the forge daily for rest and food breaks makes for a pleasant, leisurely side activity.

The main method to boost your Prestige and access upgrades is by completing the new forge quests. But you can also earn coins and Prestige passively by storing armor and weapons you find during gameplay in a chest at your forge, as Magdalena will sell them off for you.

With growing reputation at your blacksmith’s workshop, a host of enhancements become available to you, such as an armorsmith, foundry, beehives, horse stable, laundry and washing tubs, alchemy station, abundant food and alcohol supplies – essentially all the resources necessary for enhancing your capabilities before embarking on challenging adventures. You also have the option to upgrade your bedroom with beneficial items, along with charming decorations. Witnessing the transformation of your once modest workshop into one of the most prestigious structures in town is incredibly rewarding, and a notable feature within the DLC.

The level of enjoyment you derive from Legacy of the Forge largely hinges upon your engagement with King’s Crown 2. If you’ve yet to finish exploring Kuttenberg, Legacy of the Forge offers an engaging supplement that extends your adventure. However, if you’ve already completed King’s Crown 2, the quests in Legacy of the Forge might seem a bit shallow. It boils down to personal preferences, but I found it delightful to revisit Kuttenberg and establish myself as the town’s most esteemed blacksmith, a feat that would surely make Martin proud.
