Hey there! It’s clear that Lex Luthor in the DCU’s summer blockbuster had some sort of intense feelings towards Superman. He seemed to be meticulously studying Superman’s every move for precise replication, even creating a clone. The line between admiration and obsession can get blurry sometimes, right? I like to call it in the fandom as Clex, where love and hate coexist in a complex way.
Lex kept Superman imprisoned in a special interdimensional prison, a place reserved for his exes, if you will. And let’s not forget, Lex’s official DCU playlist for Superman is quite… gay-inclusive. Artists like Prince, Bowie, Queen, and even Perfume Genius are on there. A song about inducing “gay panic” is also included in the list.
So, it seems that Lex had quite an affection for Superman, even though Lois and Clark were the main romantic focus of the movie. But nothing excited Clex fans more than the announcement for the upcoming Superman film, Man of Tomorrow.
Admittedly, I was taken aback when I saw it. Three brand-new DC art pieces are out now, focusing on the interaction between Lex Luthor and Superman. The one I found particularly intriguing features Superman holding a screwdriver! Now, since we’re in a family setting, let’s keep things PG. To put it delicately, this artwork seems to suggest a playful or flirtatious dynamic between the two characters. And as for the screwdriver, well, it might as well be a symbol of their unusual camaraderie. Both characters seem to enjoy each other’s company in these pieces, even appearing to team up in one of them – and that definitely brings Clex fans some joy!
It’s common knowledge that if Clex were to occur, it would likely be supported by Nicholas Hoult. In fact, there’s even speculation about the potential for Lex and Clark to have a child together somewhere within the DC Universe. Therefore, it seems the chances are increasingly in our favor for such an event.
It’s quite unlikely that Clark Kent and Lex Luthor will develop a romantic relationship in the upcoming Superman movie, despite Lex Luthor being a fan of Perfume Genius, an artist often favored within the LGBTQ+ community. However, James Gunn has confirmed that the upcoming movie “Man of Tomorrow” focuses on the relationship between Lex and Clark, and they will join forces to face a more significant threat together (which I correctly predicted would be Clex).

Gunn explains that “Man of Tomorrow” involves both Lex Luthor and Superman joining forces to tackle a major threat, although it’s more intricate than that summary suggests. He mentions that the movie is just as much about Lex as it is about Superman. Gunn enjoyed collaborating with Nicholas Hoult, identifying with the character of Lex on some level. He was eager to craft something exceptional featuring these two characters. Gunn simply adores the script.
Could James Gunn please concoct something exceptional for the relationship between the two characters? We yearn for the Clex dynamic that resonates with us deeply. After all, Superman’s powerful speech at the end of the film was essentially an expression of faith in Lex and a hope for his improvement. Nicholas Hoult portrayed an extraordinary vulnerability within the complex character of Lex Luthor, a quality we can’t allow to be overlooked. If not handled skillfully, this character could have been truly despicable. However, there’s something intriguing about him in these hands. Even if it’s not a full-fledged romantic relationship, we are eager to see them develop a more nuanced dynamic rather than being arch-nemeses. The remaining aspects of their story are already well-established within the fan fiction realm. It appears our wish might be granted soon.
Superman‘s sequel, Man of Tomorrow, releases on July 9, 2027.
