Noah Hawley’s STAR TREK Film Would Have Connected to Data

The writer Noah Hawley is breathing new life into the Alien series through his captivating FX show Alien: Earth. Previously, he crafted one of the most distinctive X-Men spin-offs with Legion. Not so long ago, he was also working on a Star Trek movie. Since 2016, Paramount has been developing numerous different Star Trek feature film projects, and Hawley’s project was one of them. Interestingly, given the narrative of Alien: Earth, the cancelled Trek movie that Hawley was working on shared connections with the beloved Star Trek: The Next Generation android officer, Data (Brent Spiner). In an interview with Men’s Journal, via Slashfilm, this is what Hawley had to say about his aborted Trek project:

The experience was fantastic; we were even shooting scenes in Australia, interacting with actors on set. It was a tough pill to swallow as we came so close, but ultimately didn’t succeed. This project wasn’t related to Chris Pine or Captain Kirk, though. What might linger in people’s minds is the concept of unveiling Data, our android character, which was intended for future films.

Paraphrasing is about finding different ways to express the same idea without changing its core meaning, making it more natural and easy-to-read.

Could this movie be exploring the origin story of Dr. Noonien Soong’s creation of the first sentient android, Data, similar to a prequel for The Next Generation? As per Star Trek lore, Data was the second attempt by the talented scientist, following his failed prototype Lore. The lack of emotional capabilities in Data was due to the destructive actions of his “brother” Lore. This fascinating backstory could have made an excellent Star Trek film, but instead, we find some of those concepts being developed on Alien: Earth. Meanwhile, Paramount continues to plan for the fourteenth Star Trek movie, although the specific form it will take remains uncertain.
