In a delightful turn of events, Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson are set to share the screen once more. While their upcoming project may not be suitable for younger audiences, it certainly seems to hold promise for the Academy Awards. With the emotional new trailer of The Smashing Machine, we can’t help but speculate if both stars might find themselves in contention for nominations at future Academy Award ceremonies. Indulge in the second trailer for The Smashing Machine below.
If you’ve felt disenchanted with Dwayne Johnson’s movie choices, his upcoming role might come as a refreshing change. In the new MMA film directed by Benny Safdie, Johnson steps into a much more somber character. Although he portrayed real-life mixed martial arts legend Mark Kerr in “The Smashing Machine,” this time around, he seems a world apart from his popular “The Rock” persona in the trailer. Instead of bombastic showmanship, he appears thoughtful, introspective, and suffering. Yet, despite the change in demeanor, Johnson still conveys an impression of being able to overpower a bear – but now with hair, adding a unique twist!
In the trailer for “The Smashing Machine,” I find Emily Blunt’s portrayal of Dawn Staples, Kerr’s wife, particularly captivating. Although the film doesn’t flinch from depicting the harsh realities of the sport that made Kerr a legend, it seems to be focused on its characters, with Kerr and Staples at the heart of the storyline.
The movie titled “The Smashing Machine,” distributed by A24, features actors Ryan Bader, Bas Rutten, and Oleksandr Usyk. It made its debut at the 2021 Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Silver Lion for Best Director. Following its screening at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, it has received positive reviews from critics. However, general audiences will have to wait until October 3, 2025, to find out if “The Smashing Machine” lives up to its promising trailer and critical acclaim.
Apart from anticipating its success, we’re also hoping it performs well. If it receives recognition at the Academy Awards, perhaps Dwayne Johnson will continue to explore more substantial roles in future projects.
