Originally, “The Rocky Horror Show” debuted as a successful off-Broadway musical. This play humorously spoofed science fiction and horror films from the 1950s, all while championing early Rock ‘n Roll, sexual liberation, and open LGBTQ+ themes. However, what thrives as a musical performance in big cities may not guarantee success everywhere else. When Twentieth Century Fox released the film on September 26, 1975, they struggled to find a way to promote it. In the mid-1970s, how could one sell a movie about an alien mad scientist named Dr. Frank N. Furter from the planet Transsexual to mainstream America? They couldn’t, and the film failed initially. But it unexpectedly resurfaced as a midnight movie, attracting audiences of outcasts, goths, and partygoers at global screenings held during midnight hours.
In a segment on CBS Sunday Morning, some original actors from the famous film, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, reflect on five decades of its history. Among them are Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, and Tim Curry, who despite his partial paralysis, shared insightful thoughts about the enduring influence of his unconventional character. With many forms of non-traditional sexual identities being challenged these days, the carefree and entertaining spirit of The Rocky Horror Picture Show seems more pertinent than ever. Here’s to hoping that we continue dancing the “Time Warp” for another 50 years!
On Saturday evenings at midnight, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” continues to be screened nationwide. The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray edition becomes available on October 7.
