When Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) introduced its Adobe Ranch premium add-on sauce in June, the burrito roller, with a flourish, declared it its first new dip since the reformulated Queso Blanco debuted five years prior. Investors, ever the skeptical scribes, know this to be a tale spun with the same glibness as a tavern keeper’s promise of eternal youth. For those who have tracked the stock’s five-year arc, the dips-both literal and metaphorical-have been as frequent as the moon’s phases.
Chipotle, a paragon of growth stocks, has ascended a modest 60% over five years, a pace so pedestrian it might as well have been measured in inches. The three-year span, half that, whispers of a faltering gait. Yet the past year has seen a quarter of its value vanish, as if the stock itself had been ensnared by a sorcerer’s curse. To trace the descent from mid-June of last year-when the shares hit an all-time high mere days before a 50-for-1 split-reveals a plunge of 40%, a tragedy more tragic than a poet’s unrequited love.
There are reasons for the downturn, though they linger in the shadows like the devil’s own shadow. Yet the question lingers: has Chipotle fallen far enough to tempt the investor’s palate? Forget Adobe Ranch, Queso Blanco, and even the famed guacamole. Is this the dip that beckons the discerning investor? One analyst, perhaps a scribe of the financial underworld, seems to think so.
Putting the “up” in upgrade
Chris Luyckx of Rothschild & Co Redburn, a man whose pen wields more power than a medieval knight’s sword, upgraded Chipotle on Wednesday. His $55 price target remains unchanged, yet his rating ascends from neutral to buy-a move as audacious as a bard reciting sonnets in a brothel. This 32% upside, though tempting, is not born of convenience. One might argue the analyst could have merely lowered his target and maintained a lukewarm stance, but such logic is for the unambitious.
Luyckx concedes Chipotle is navigating a tempest. After years of positive comps, same-restaurant sales have turned negative, a reversal as disheartening as a priest’s loss of faith. Yet he insists the slump is cyclical, not structural-a temporary blight, not a fatal ailment. With a brand as enduring as a Soviet monument and a fan base as loyal as a dog to its master, Chipotle, he argues, is poised to reclaim its glory once the economic fog lifts.
Chipotle’s CEO, Scott Boatwright, echoed this optimism on CNBC’s Mad Money, declaring the chain could return to mid-single-digit comps growth. His confidence, though, is as fragile as a glass cathedral. The rollout of carne asada-a limited-time protein revived after two years-suggests the company is not idle, though its past rigidity under Brian Niccol’s tenure serves as a cautionary tale. The lesson? Even the most steadfast traditions must bend to the winds of change.
Chipotle’s trajectory, though, hints at a pivot. After a 0.4% decline in the first quarter and a 4% slide in the second, its guidance for 2025 is cautiously optimistic. Flat comps, it claims, will be offset by a mild rebound in the second half-a balancing act as delicate as a tightrope walker’s dance.
Cheap is relative
Redburn’s analyst notes Chipotle’s position as a cheaper meal in a fast-casual world overrun by premium salad empires and pricy Mediterranean ventures. Here, the chain’s affordability is a shield against the rising tide of inflation. Yet even this advantage is fleeting, as dollar menus fade and prices climb like a drunken climber.
The stock, too, is a relic of affordability, trading at 31 times forward earnings-a multiple that, while not meager, is a shadow of its former self. Luyckx points out Chipotle has not traded this low since 2015, a fact as significant as a prophet’s whisper. Yet the counterargument looms: future growth, once robust, now seems as distant as a dream.
And so, the investor stands at a crossroads, where the scent of Chipotle’s sauces mingles with the bitter aroma of market uncertainty. A choice is made, as all choices are, in the shadow of the unknown. 🌮
