In recent years, skate groups have been making their presence felt in parks and city streets, and this resurgence is not just about sports but also forging genuine human connections. However, it’s important to note that skating extends beyond mere physical movement; it encompasses a lively culture steeped in music, style, and personal expression.
The heart of this skating scene is occupied by Flipper’s Roller Boogie Palace, a skate brand reintroduced by Liberty Ross in 2022. This iconic West Hollywood spot was originally founded by her father Ian “Flipper” Ross back in 1979. Beyond just a skating rink, Flipper’s is a cultural hub that has drawn celebrities like Prince, Usher, Dr. Dre, and Mary J. Blige, as well as various subcultures and collaborations with brands such as Brain Dead, adidas, and Hunza G.
Following some exciting periods of energetic collaborations and rejuvenations, Flipper’s is now entering a new chapter – presenting its debut fashion line, the Flipper’s Style Line. This venture is spearheaded by Ross’s daughter and successful fashion mogul Liberty Ross.
For the Fall/Winter ’25 season, a unisex collection blends skate heritage with modern streetwear fashion, resulting in a sharp yet contemporary style. Highlights from this line include a revamped MA-1 bomber jacket, stylish nylon outerwear adorned with photographs, and eye-catching sherpa jackets. T-shirts and sweatshirts showcase vintage artwork from Palace’s golden era, while collectible items such as totes, skate straps, band-aids, and sticker packs evoke nostalgic feelings within the skating community.
In our conversation with Liberty Ross, we delved into the inspiration behind her line, the influence of skatewear as a powerful form of cultural expression, and the role of fashion in attracting more individuals to the skating world. Here’s what she had to share on these topics.
TopMob: It’s your first fashion collection – why now?
Liberty Ross expresses that the heart of their endeavors is their community. From the book “Flipper’s Roller Boogie Palace 1979-81,” through skating rinks, merchandise, collaborations, they are now prepared to offer apparel tailored for their community – a request she frequently hears from friends at Flipper’s, such as requests for cargo pants with stretch. Their community serves as the inspiration for everything created at Flipper’s.
With retro fashion trends heavily influencing social media feeds, it can sometimes seem like we’re trapped in a repeating cycle of nostalgia, making it challenging to develop fresh ideas in the world of fashion. Yet, Flipper’s Fashion is grounded in tradition; how do you draw from the past without being overwhelmed by it?
Contemporary elements such as music, cinema, and fashion often draw inspiration from the past, but what makes us unique is our ability to authentically tap into history. For instance, we draw upon the essence of Flipper’s launch in 1979, while simultaneously merging that with the contemporary sensibilities of today’s skateboarding community, resulting in the modern-day manifestation we know today.
What keeps the design language forward-facing?
Refashioning classic wardrobe items using a versatile design approach – components that can be disassembled, providing new styles to wear while maintaining functionality suitable for both roller-skating and daily activities, adaptable throughout various seasons.
The popularity of skating is surging anew, as it’s being embraced as a means to disconnect from digital devices and foster personal interactions. Small-scale skate scenes are sprouting up in various locations, but how can fashion trends related to streetwear serve as a connection point for forming real-life skate communities and encourage more individuals to join?
Rollerskating is arguably the sport most intertwined with street life, given its strong ties to urban culture and the birth of the term “streetwear.” This unique blend of fashion and sport has found its peak in rollerskating, offering a distinctive street-style that we strive to celebrate and acknowledge, not just for skaters, but for anyone seeking that liberating feeling it brings.
In the past, you’ve collaborated on some impressive projects, such as with Brain Dead. Now that Flipper has launched its own standalone line, I’m curious about how the creative process has changed for you. What unique brand codes can we look forward to in this independent collection?
Functionality holds significant value, much like our heritage serves as a strong foundation. We remain faithful to the cultural essence that defines Flippers. For us, roller skating symbolizes liberty, camaraderie, and an underground spirit. Our perspective is vibrant, energetic, and visually appealing – a living testament to color and graphics.
As a devoted follower, I’ve noticed that the latest setback experienced by the Phoenix Mercury has vividly illustrated the distinction between skateboarding and basketball cultures. What makes this separation so effective, in your opinion?
In simpler terms, both basketball and roller skating have their roots in the streets. Just like basketball, roller skating has made its way into high-profile events such as the NBA Finals Halftime Show, and we’re currently sponsoring the Phoenix Mercury WNBA team with our brand. Similarly, basketball has influenced fashion trends through its players’ unique styles. We believe that roller skating will follow suit and become a trendsetter in fashion as well.
Considering this, will the “Flipper Fashion Collection” keep blending skate culture with other sports? Will there be additional instances of surprising cultural crossovers in the future?
Undoubtedly, our goal at Flipper’s is to keep pushing the boundaries of roller skating as a sport. Skaters, being athletes themselves, have been showcased on some of the world’s most prestigious stages – from the Super Bowl to the VMAs and EMAs. We firmly believe that roller skating deserves to be recognized alongside other sports in the global arena.
What’s some advice for an individual looking to connect with others and immerse themselves in the skate scene, beyond just the activity itself? Here’s my suggestion:
1. Join Local Skateparks: Regularly visiting your local skatepark is a great way to meet other enthusiasts and build relationships. You can share tips, watch each other skate, and even learn new tricks together.
2. Participate in Events: Look for local skate events such as competitions, meetups, or workshops. These gatherings often attract like-minded individuals who share your passion for the skate lifestyle.
3. Engage Online: Join online communities and forums dedicated to skating. Sharing photos, videos, and stories about your experiences can help you connect with others and gain valuable insights from more experienced skaters.
4. Collaborate on Projects: Work together with other skaters on projects like building DIY skate spots or organizing events. Collaboration can foster strong bonds and help you feel more a part of the community.
5. Support Local Shops: Shopping at local skate stores not only supports the scene but also provides opportunities to engage with fellow skaters and learn about new products and events in your area.
6. Be Respectful and Open-Minded: Always treat others with respect, be open to learning from them, and share your own experiences. Building strong relationships within the skate community often starts with a positive attitude and genuine interest in others.
In a warm and inclusive environment, everyone feels like they belong, regardless of your skating background. Skaters here are always there to help you up after a fall – an occurrence that is bound to happen! Whether you’re three or 103, the fun never stops. Our mission at Flipper’s is to cultivate and spread the love for roller skating globally.
The latest styles from the ‘Flipper’s Fashion Collection’ are now accessible both in-store at Dover Street Market LA, as well as online through Flipper’s official website.
