Tori Spelling’s SCREAM Story Is the Franchise’s Funniest Gag

The initial two “Scream” movies are widely regarded as the best due to several factors. They set the stage for a series that embraces self-referential humor, clever phone calls and deaths, and a villainous figure with an iconic silhouette and voice. These films weren’t shy about poking fun at both the horror genre and certain celebrities, such as Tori Spelling, who was famous for her role on “Beverly Hills, 90210” at the time. Interestingly enough, Tori Spelling’s connection to the “Scream” series has since become one of its most humorous inside jokes.

In the past, it came to light that she had tried out for the part of Sidney Prescott. She found herself against formidable contenders, among them Reese Witherspoon, Alicia Dewitt, Neve Campbell, and even Drew Barrymore, who eventually took on the role of Casey Becker. The competition was tough for a horror movie, as such productions often did not feature well-known actors in main roles.

Reading the “Scream” script, Tori Spelling found a joke aimed at her amusing. The scene is well-known where Sid’s friend Tatum queries who would play her in a movie. Dewey Riley suggests Meg Ryan as an excellent choice, but Sidney sarcastically remarks that, given her luck, Tori Spelling would land the role instead. Interestingly, Tori Spelling did not appear in the initial “Scream” movie. However, one wonders how she reacted to that jab at her career?

In 2025, Tori Spelling spoke candidly on Jamie Kennedy’s “Hate To Break It To Ya” podcast about her amusing association with the Scream franchise. For those who recall, Kennedy is recognized for his role as Randy Meeks, the horror film enthusiast in the initial installments. Referring to her life being a constant joke, she mentioned that self-deprecation was something she embraced early on. “People used to make fun of me like that,” she said, “and I wasn’t hurt by it. Instead, I thought, ‘Oh yeah, this mirrors my life. That’s funny. I get it. I’m in the loop.’

In a casual cafe setting, Randy and Dewey catch a glimpse of Tori Spelling promoting her latest film, “Stab,” a movie reenacting the Woodsboro murders. During this TV appearance, Randy expresses surprise that Sidney’s role is played by Tori while someone less prominent portrays him in the movie. This could indicate Randy’s admiration for Tori or perhaps acknowledges her as a talented and attractive actress.

There’s a sneak peek at a scene called “Stab” where Sidney and Billy meet again at school following the day when she had him arrested. It’s amusing because Tori Spelling portrayed Sidney in this movie-within-a-movie. Wes Craven himself extended the offer for her cameo, mentioning that the Scream team has a soft spot for her. According to him, she was completely on board with the initial film’s joke and grabbed the opportunity to have a bit of self-deprecating fun. To be honest, if I were given the chance to participate in a humorous reference like this in a movie, I’d take it as well.

Since that time, Tori Spelling hasn’t appeared in the series anymore, but her role as Sidney in the initial two Stab films is firmly established within this fictional world. It’s conceivable that she could have returned as Sidney in the third film, which revolves around the Hollywood murders of Scream 3, but it’s unlikely because the murder plot may have terrified her initially. Now, she has a lasting role in the Scream universe thanks to one of its most humorous jokes.
