Paradox explains the difference between Europa Universalis 5’s DLC types

Any strategy enthusiast is well-aware that Paradox Interactive’s games often include numerous years of additional support after launch, offering free updates and paid expansions. The upcoming game Europa Universalis 5 follows this trend, as it already has three DLCs announced before its release, which will be included in the Premium Edition. Paradox has categorized these expansions into Immersion and Chronicle Packs, but what sets them apart?

For strategy game lovers who know that Paradox Interactive’s titles come with extensive post-launch support (free updates and paid expansions), Europa Universalis 5 continues this trend by having three DLCs announced before its release, which will be available in the Premium Edition. These DLCs are divided into Immersion and Chronicle Packs, but what makes them distinct from each other?

At Gamescom 2025, DBLTAP posed a question to Paradox about the differences between their two types of content packs, and the developers elucidated the distinct characteristics that set them apart.

The packs we’re calling Chronicles will primarily focus on a single nation or a duo of nations with strong ties. In these expansion packs, players can expect content that enriches their gaming experience when playing as these featured countries. This includes new scenarios, serving as the narrative backbone in EU5, replacing EU4’s mission trees for nations. These scenarios offer chances to reinterpret real-world events, like the 100 Years War between England and France, which is depicted in the base game as an example.

In the first two Total War: Warhammer games developed by Creative Assembly, The Lord Packs can be likened as an apt comparison. These packs offer content for two distinct nations intertwined by a storyline, much like additional content in Total War: Warhammer 2, such as The Prophet and The Warlock DLC, which do the same but for different nations, bound together narratively.

As an enthusiast, I’d say Immersion Packs are all about enhancing the gaming experience by adding a rich layer of flavor. These packs offer new events, distinctive buildings, additional reforms, and other intriguing elements that make each playthrough more immersive. Some of these features subtly influence gameplay, while others are purely aesthetic, contributing to the overall depth and charm of the game.

Based on what we’ve learned, it’s clear that Paradox will continue to develop these products, making adjustments according to user data and input, much like the DLC content for Crusader Kings 3 has evolved from its launch until now.

Europa Universalis 5 DLC roadmap for 2026

For its first year of post-launch support, the following expansions are awaiting EU5:

  • Fate of the Phoenix – Immersion Pack (Q2 2026)
  • Across the Pillars – Chronicle Pack (Q3 2026)
  • The Auld Alliance – Chronicle Pack (Q4 2026)

The storyline of the Phoenix Revival centers on the Byzantine Empire, offering insights into rejuvenating and strengthening its ties to its ancient Roman heritage.

As an enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that my narrative, “Across the Pillars,” will focus on the dynamic interplay between Castile and Morocco. This story promises fresh strategies in their ongoing struggle for dominance over the strategically vital Straits of Gibraltar.

The historic bond known as the Auld Alliance will shine a light on both France and Scotland, providing insights into their joint struggles against England and their internal disputes.
