Last year marked the 50th anniversary celebration for Saturday Night Live. Sadly, this summer has seen the tradition of letting go of several team members continue. With Lorne Michaels, a close friend of Paul Simon, overseeing significant changes to his variety show before its return for season 51 on October 4, it’s no wonder that some cast members are leaving. Interestingly, last year’s group comprised 14 main members and three featured players. It’s not uncommon for Michaels to make such adjustments, but some departures may catch fans off guard. Let’s take a look at who won’t be returning to Saturday Night Live – so far.
Heidi Gardner
As a dedicated movie critic, I must express that the departure of Heidi Gardner, a seasoned and exceptional performer who joined the Saturday Night Live family in 2017, is one of the most notable departures we’ve seen so far. Her promotion to main cast member in season 45 only further solidified her place among the show’s elite.
Though Heidi has remained silent on the matter, speculation suggests that after eight fruitful years with SNL, she is choosing to move on. This decision leaves Ego Nwodim as the longest-serving female cast member, a testament to both their talent and enduring connection to the show.
Devon Walker
In simpler terms, Devon Walker was the initial cast member who wasn’t returning for season 51. His departure came as a surprise, given his three-season tenure. Lorne Michaels had promoted Walker to the main cast prior to the show’s 50th season. However, Walker himself clarified in an interview with Rolling Stone that the decision was mutual between him and the show, stating, “We agreed it was time for us to part ways.
Additionally, he expressed in a post on Instagram upon his departure that “occasionally it was truly exhilarating” to be part of the series, yet admitted that at times it could also be incredibly harmful and challenging.
Michael Longfellow
Besides Walker, another cast member named Michael Longfellow is leaving the show after three seasons. Interestingly, he was promoted to the main cast before season 50, but unlike Walker, his departure wasn’t a mutual decision. On Instagram, Longfellow posted, “I won’t be back for the fourth season on SNL. Wish I could, but it seems that’s not meant to be.” Despite feeling sad about leaving, Longfellow expressed gratitude for his time on the legendary show.
Emil Wakim
The most surprising departure so far has been Emil Wakim’s, who left after only one season. Known for his humorous stand-up, he made an impact during his debut and sole year on the show, with appearances on Weekend Update. Despite being a great fit in sketches too, Wakim wasn’t expecting to be let go. On Instagram, he described it as a “gut punch.” However, showcasing his comedic talent, he transformed this major setback into something amusing, which is evident on his Instagram page.
We’ll update this list if Saturday Night Live announces anymore departures from the cast.
