First ‘Clayface’ Set Photos Shut Down Long-Running DCU Rumor

Initial pictures of the Clayface filming set are appearing on social media, and these images have already put to rest one of the most widespread speculations concerning the DC Universe.

In my recent movie experience, I found myself captivated by a detail that might seem minor to some, but not to Batman fans: the Gotham City Police Department logo. While cruising through Gotham City on-screen, I couldn’t help but notice that this emblem bore little resemblance to the one we’ve grown accustomed to seeing in Matt Reeves’ Batman projects.

In the online world, some individuals debated that logos can evolve, but that doesn’t align with the situation at hand. The Batman films by Reeves were never intended for the DC Universe, and a fresh Batman character will be introduced in The Brave and the Bold.

In essence, these images reveal an alternate version of Gotham City, tailored for the DC Universe, distinct from previous depictions. This discovery solidifies the notion that Reeves’ Gotham could potentially intersect with the DCU. As a result, fans are speculating whether this film might feature the inaugural live-action Batman appearance in the new universe.

In a twist from typical DC films, the narrative unfolds around a character named Clayface. Initially, this individual was an actor, but a brutal encounter with a gangster left him faceless. As a result of despair, he sought help from a scientist who transformed his entire physique into malleable clay.

In the year 2023, filmmaker Mike Flanagan sat down for discussions with James Gunn and Peter Safran regarding a project. During these talks, Flanagan proposed presenting Clayface in a unique manner, moving away from his traditional portrayal as a mere antagonist.

In December 2024, DC Studios authorized production of the film, with a screenplay penned by Flanagan. At that point, Peter Safran commented that the movie’s mood was reminiscent of the 1986 film ‘The Fly.’ Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris are producing this project through 6th & Idaho Productions. However, due to his commitments on ‘The Exorcist’ and a ‘Carrie’ miniseries, Flanagan couldn’t direct. Instead, James Watkins took over directorial duties, while Hossein Amini revised the script.

This June, the role of Clayface was given to actor Tom Rhys Harries. The filming began recently at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in England, with a scheduled release on September 11, 2026.

It’s evident from the initial images that the film is establishing a unique niche within the DC Universe. Fans eagerly anticipate whether Batman will make an appearance alongside Clayface.
