With James Gunn’s DC Universe now in full swing and over half a dozen heroes already confirmed, the question on everyone’s mind is still: “Who will take on the role of Batman?” It’s uncertain whether Gunn and his partner at DC Studios, Peter Safran, plan to cast Batman before Matt Reeves’ Batman saga concludes. However, fans continue to speculate about potential actors for Bruce Wayne. One fan favorite is Alan Ritchson, known for his role in Reacher. Contrary to popular belief, Ritchson himself has stated he won’t be playing the Caped Crusader.
In a chat with Variety (as reported by IGN), Ritchson openly expressed his admiration for Gunn, and in turn, Gunn reciprocated the feeling. Furthermore, Ritchson disclosed that they indeed discussed the Dark Knight in a private conversation.
I want to make it clear that there’s been some discussion about Batman, but let me set your mind at ease – I don’t foresee myself becoming Batman in the future. However, I do see a connection with DC in my future, and I hope this continues to be the case.
It appears that Gunn’s statements suggest he has been planning for Batman, possibly following a template similar to “Batman and Son.” This would imply a slightly matured Batman, as Ritchson is 42 and has three children. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean Ritchson will play Batman, as Gunn may have something specific in mind. Alternatively, if Ritchson isn’t playing Batman, he could be considered for other roles, such as Deathstroke in the reported team-up movie with Bane. Our DC expert, Eric Diaz, suggests that Ritchson could also play New God Orion, which is another possibility to consider.
It turns out that Chris Pratt isn’t going to portray Batman, as revealed by Gunn. In fact, Pratt has discussed potential roles in the DC Universe, but they are not for Batman. Although I would have liked to see Jesse Ritchson in the role of Batman, I’m relieved that Pratt won’t be taking it up either. I believe this casting decision wouldn’t have been ideal, and Gunn seems to agree with me.
So, who will play the DCU’s Dark Knight? The search goes on.
