Owlcat openly acknowledges that The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is their most challenging project to date. However, during my visit to Gamescom 2025, it’s clear that the same level of passion and meticulous care that characterized their past RPGs, particularly those with an isometric view, remains intact, despite the shift in perspective.
In our game, Alexander Mishulin, one of the studio’s founders and creative directors, guided us through a mission. The player, along with his band of companions, which includes his twin brother, have fled Eros where the proto-molecule was released. They’ve managed to seize a ship from the opposing forces, ensuring it was a legitimate salvage operation, and now they’re modifying their home station’s transponder on this ship.
As a gamer, stepping into Osiris Reborn feels like venturing into a bustling world ripe with lootable spots, hidden secrets, and engaging dialogues – plus, there are side quests to embark on for those seeking an extra challenge. However, the game’s visuals are stunning overall, but some facial animations could use a bit more life, appearing somewhat stiff at times. The same can be said about the voice acting and dialogue I’ve encountered; it feels wooden at moments, jarringly out of sync with the context of the conversation.
As a devoted follower, here’s my take: In the heat of the moment, we found ourselves at a crossroads. Should we rally the chief to defend against the invaders or remain hidden and keep them out of our affairs? In hindsight, we chose the former, unwittingly turning the station into a battlefield. Sadly, this decision led to heavy casualties among the inhabitants. Moreover, the depleted population meant fewer resources for us when we eventually reached the armory. Guns were taken for the fight, leaving us with less loot. It’s hard to predict what long-term impact this would have on the campaign. Will Protogen’s heavy losses on that space station ultimately benefit us? Or could the disgruntled survivors of the massacre potentially pose problems for us in the future?
Experience Owlcat games in their authentic form, where every choice carries significant impact. The narrative won’t sugarcoat outcomes, so be ready for severe repercussions when making decisions. I inquired about the possibility of manipulating companions and other characters given the intricate personal agendas and political aspects present in the original content, and was assured that you’ll have freedom to romance, deceive, scheme, and even play multiple roles as an agent – all while the game remains unresponsive to second thoughts or warnings about potential consequences.
In a different, more substantial sci-fi style compared to the TV series, Owlcat’s design immerses you deeply into the show’s universe. On the space station, we can catch James Holden’s famous broadcast following the Canterbury‘s demise. Several actors from the show have reprised their roles for the game, making Osiris Reborn a kind of link between the TV show and books. Although our adventure intersects with the Holden crew – and is influenced by their actions and choices – Mishulin emphasizes that our own voyage will feature its own significant challenges and won’t be eclipsed by the larger storyline unfolding.
Essentially, corporate soldiers, heavily armed, are invading the space station, triggering a shootout. This scene offers a cover system, frequent use of ammunition and healing items, as Mishulin pointed out that Owlcat encourages their usage extensively. The guns seem challenging to aim and manage, possibly due to the presenter’s fatigue on a Friday evening at Gamescom. Consequently, many shots missed their mark because of the strong recoil, necessitating frequent reloading during combat. Unfortunately, I couldn’t test the gunplay myself to give you my personal experience.
In non-engineered zero-gravity situations, self-propelled grenades don’t function effectively. There aren’t many options for skill usage beyond combat, as it tends to focus heavily on shooting. I’m hoping for some diversity in gameplay mechanics despite the straightforward setting.
In battle, it was essential that you were directing your partner, as our sibling frequently rescued us from difficult predicaments by firing accurately or detonating at our command. By the way, many objects can be destroyed, leaving the rooms filled with rubble and scorch marks.
Apart from that, physics play a significant role in the game. Owlcat aimed for realism, except where it might disrupt gameplay. For instance, unique running animations were designed for zero-gravity settings and even some specific ones for extraordinary cases, but these were ultimately abandoned as they made movement seem unnatural and caused motion sickness for some players. There are space combat sound effects, though they are muted to distinguish them from those in an atmosphere.
During our escape towards the ship, a part of the mission unfolds on the outer framework of the space station. The debris moves predictably along intended paths, varying based on our location on the rotating modules. Although it might seem unusual to use the term in this scenario, it adds an engaging sense of atmosphere.
From this presentation, it appears that the main point being emphasized is the demonstration’s conclusive evidence of Owlcat’s dedication and expertise in creating RPGs, as evidenced by the game’s immersive environments, attention to detail, and intriguing physics applications. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a clear sense of the role-playing aspects or combat feel from this brief demonstration; more hands-on experience over a longer period of time would be necessary for that.
Regardless if you’re eagerly anticipating a game reminiscent of Mass Effect or deeply engrossed in The Expanse series, Osiris Reborn is definitely worth keeping an eye on.
