The announcement for the return of Silent Hill was made in October 2022. Filming for this project started in Germany and Serbia between April 2023 and continued until February 2024.
The film will be released in U.S. cinemas on January 23, 2026, by both Cineverse and Iconic Events Releasing, as stated in the latest updates.
The narrative centers around James Sunderland, a man grieving over the loss of his beloved partner. Upon receiving a cryptic message, he finds himself inexorably pulled towards the ominous town of Silent Hill, which now bears a sinister transformation due to some malign influence.
As James delves further, he comes across harrowing beings, some of which are known and others not, and finds it challenging to discern the truth. It is reported that he strives to remain resilient in an attempt to save the one he cherishes dearly.
In this production, Jeremy Irvine portrays James Sunderland, while Hannah Emily Anderson takes on the role of Mary. Notably, Evie Templeton embodies the character of Laura both on-screen and through motion capture and voice work in the reboot of the Silent Hill 2 video game.
Since 2020, Christophe Gans has been developing fresh screenplays related to Silent Hill and Fatal Frame, expressing his desire for these series to adopt an anthology-style approach, reminiscent of The Twilight Zone, allowing each story to delve into distinct psychological aspects of the town.
According to Gans, the movie was inspired by ‘P.T.’, a playable teaser for the canceled Silent Hills game, and he collaborated closely with Konami to create a unique appearance for the monsters, including Pyramid Head. In simpler terms, he stated that the film draws inspiration from ‘P.T.’ and worked together with Konami to design a distinct look for the monsters, specifically mentioning Pyramid Head.
The main filming took place across various sites, with Belgrade and numerous German cities like Munich, Penzing, Nuremberg, and Lake Ammer being among them.
The movie was funded by Davis Films and Ashland Hill Media Finance, along with €1 million from Germany’s FFY Bayern media funding program. In an interview in February 2025, Gans stated that the film was completed ten days earlier than initially planned due to delays caused by the executive producers, with the completion actually taking place in January 2024 instead of April.
Now that the trailer has been released, fans can catch their first glimpse into the terrifying realm of Silent Hill. It’s set to deliver intense frights and psychological terror. The upcoming film, “Return to Silent Hill,” appears to be a spine-tingling reboot of the cherished video game franchise, scheduled for release in theaters starting next January.
