It’s clear that more modern interpretations of L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” such as the film “Wicked,” aren’t going to be the last. In fact, Prime Video is currently working on a series called “Dorothy,” which is another contemporary retelling of “The Wizard of Oz.” This series, created by Gina Matthews, has notable producers like Gwen Stefani and her husband, Blake Shelton. Interestingly, they are known as “non-writing executive producers.” According to Deadline, “Dorothy” is a youth-oriented, music-influenced reinterpretation of “The Wizard of Oz,” using the Yellow Brick Road as a symbol for the trials and decisions that young adults face in today’s world, based on L. Frank Baum’s books.
In reference to the Dorothy series, Matthews expressed, “I’ve had an enduring affection for The Wizard of Oz books since my childhood days. The narrative serves as a poignant reminder of the virtues required to persevere through challenging times, and Dorothy symbolizes strength by demonstrating that with a touch of compassion-and a generous amount of determination-one can not only accomplish remarkable feats but also uplift those around them. I’m thrilled to share this message with the world, especially in these trying times.”
Gwen Stefani commented on Dorothy as well, stating, “This is a fresh and contemporary interpretation of a timeless tale. Being involved in a project that merges music, emotion, and the character of Dorothy fills me with inspiration.
The story of “The Wizard of Oz” has been remade in modern ways more than most other works, making it a popular choice for film producers due to its enduring fame and being part of the public domain. For every successful adaptation like “Wicked,” there are less memorable ones such as “Tin Man” or “The Witches of Oz.” Shows like “Emerald City,” featuring Adria Arjona from “Andor,” attempted a modern retelling, but it’s largely been forgotten. As a result, Dorothy may join the ranks of these contemporary reinterpretations that have been overlooked and even buried under a falling house. Recently, New Line announced plans for another “Wizard of Oz” remake that seems to have stalled. However, Gwen Stefani’s upcoming series could potentially be the next breakout success and establish itself alongside the 1939 classic. Only time will tell.
