It’s been disclosed that the initial antagonist for the film “Birds of Prey” was intended to be The Penguin, but Matt Reeves intervened to prevent this from happening.
Penguin Almost in Birds of Prey
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly about her upcoming film “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” alongside Colin Farrell, Robbie disclosed that in the early version of “Birds of Prey,” Christina Hodson had penned Penguin as the primary antagonist.
In Christina Hodson’s initial script for “Birds of Prey”, the antagonist was intended to be the Penguin. However, Matt Reeves, who had plans for the character in another project, suggested they avoid using him. As a result, the role was changed to Black Mask instead.
That’s how Ewan McGregor ended up playing Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask, in the 2020 film.
Reeves Saved Penguin for His Batman Universe
In the end, Reeves incorporated Penguin in the 2022 film, “The Batman”, with Colin Farrell portraying Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot. Later, Farrell reappeared as this character in HBO’s “The Penguin” series, garnering him a Golden Globe award and an Emmy nomination. He will reprise the role again for “The Batman: Part II”, slated to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.
As a cinephile, I can’t help but sing the praises of Hodson’s Penguin. This film left such an indelible impression that I’ve kept a copy of the script close at hand, and if you ask nicely, Farrell, I might just let you take a peek at it – though I believe it’s saved on my computer now.
Harley Quinn’s Future Unknown
It’s not yet known if Robbie’s Harley Quinn will feature in James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe, as she has not been mentioned in any upcoming productions. This leaves her future in doubt, while Farrell’s Penguin continues to play a significant role in Reeves’ Batman storyline. Robbie herself has reportedly not received any updates about the character’s appearance.
