The Peacemaker series resumed on Thursday with its second season, and it certainly did not fail to impress. As anticipated, it serves as a continuation of James Gunn’s Superman storyline, offering tantalizing hints about the future of the DC Universe.
James Gunn truly shines in Peacemaker, delivering a thrilling blend of action, mature wit, and unapologetic humor that sets it apart from other productions, such as Superman. While Superman is certainly enjoyable (I enjoyed it myself), Peacemaker breaks free from any restrictions, embodying what I like to call “unfiltered” or “locker room” comedy style.
John Cena fits perfectly into the role, showing off his locker-room humor aptly, a trait reminiscent of his days playing football (a special mention to my friend, Big Aaron, who played against Cena in the college championship game and emerged victorious with the Buffalo State Bengals). Additionally, it’s no surprise given his successful career as a WWE Superstar.
After successfully saving the world at the end of Season 1, they believed they were on a path towards joy and prosperity as fully-fledged superheroes. Contrary to their expectations, their situation has deteriorated instead, leaving them all feeling dejected. The focus of this episode is on John Cena’s Peacemaker, Danielle Brooks’ Leota, and Jennifer Holland’s Emilia. Despite their heroic status, they struggle financially, drive rundown vehicles, and live in poor conditions. I was impressed by the level of detail in portraying their hardships.
Note: Spoilers follow.
In this alternate universe within the DCU, a rift opens up, leading our character Peacemaker to a world where his deepest desires are fulfilled. Here, he’s a beloved superhero, his family – his father and brother – are alive and also superheroes, they all live in a grand mansion together. However, this utopia is short-lived as the Peacemaker from this universe faces an even more heart-wrenching fate: he’s responsible for the deaths of his own brother and father. Talk about a surprising twist!
The Justice Gang’s scene was impressively executed; I only wish they had their own series. Nathan Fillion clearly stands out as the breakout star in Gunn’s fresh DC Universe, which aligns perfectly with Gunn’s filmmaking style and his knack for creating complex, flawed characters.
Other changes were also intriguing: for instance, rebranding the Justice League as the Justice Gang; portraying Amanda Waller as angry with them and explaining their current predicament; raising questions about whether the counterparts from another universe, Auggie and Keith, might seek revenge and cause a dimensional conflict. Another mystery remains unsolved: who is responsible for the dimensional rifts? And will Peacemaker finally find inner peace???
This version aims to maintain the original meaning while making the language more natural and easier to read.
I enjoyed Frank Grillo’s response during the initial dance scene too, particularly when he was lying at the bottom, chuckling. Absolutely, it caught my attention as well.
The Verdict
As a movie enthusiast who’s always on the lookout for something exciting, I’ve got to say that I’m thoroughly enjoying Peacemaker! Gunn and Cena are simply killing it in this series, and the supporting cast is no less impressive. If you’re a comic book fan like me, Peacemaker should definitely be on your must-watch list. It gets a solid 10/10 from me!
