Lego Voyagers preview: This game really gets what Lego is all about

For years, I’ve had a fondness for Lego games, but most of them previously were tied to licensed properties, such as Star Wars or Batman. While these are appealing to many, it’s important to remember that Lego isn’t limited to those fanbases – it’s for everyone. After sampling an initial stage of Lego Voyagers, I was left with the impression that this is one of the few games in a while that truly grasps the essence of Lego, and I’m eagerly anticipating playing more.

When I assert that Lego Voyagers truly understands the essence of Lego, I ought to elaborate on my point. To me, Lego transcends simple block construction; it’s a shared experience that brings joy. It encompasses playful interaction with others, exhibiting one’s creations, and collaboratively exploring new projects. Voyagers encapsulates this spirit flawlessly.

Following a brief talk (with some audio glitches, apologies Discord), I found myself playing a game alongside an unfamiliar partner. After an awkward greeting, we embarked on a Lego adventure together, each managing a solitary 1×1 Lego brick within the Lego universe.

At the start of our journey, we stumbled upon a unique type of plant that releases spores when disturbed. Our goal soon evolved into trying to make every similar plant release its spores. This spontaneous endeavor was punctuated by occasional light teamwork in solving puzzles, which at times grew more challenging and complex.

The focus, however, was on those plants. We collected Lego planks and blocks to build bridges to cross deep crevices, employed mechanical launchers to ascend cliffs, often unintentionally connecting with each other while jumping across spaces – ending up falling due to the mishap – just to locate the next plant to inflate.

Our initial encounter was a lively, laid-back adventure brimming with laughter. Almost instantly upon meeting, a fellow unfamiliar face and I found ourselves chuckling and joking over a game, inventing rules of our own, collaborating, and erupting in fits of giggles when things got chaotic. We were having a grand old time together, gleefully revealing the absurdities we uncovered during our clumsy journey through this Lego terrain.

If given more time and opportunity, I believe I would have happily engaged in endless play with my freshly acquired companion, the Lego Voyager. Irrespective of our prior encounters or lack thereof, our shared bond over this new toy transcended the unknown aspects about each other. The Lego Voyagers bridged the gap, assigned us a mission, and bestowed smiles upon our faces. This encounter was endearing, amusing, and the game was thoroughly enjoyable, earning every second of attention from the very start.

Upon the launch of Lego Voyagers on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC on September 15, it seems I won’t be able to join my fellow voyager from the demo anymore. Instead, I might play it with my partner, a friend, family member, or colleague, creating our own unique adventure together. We’ll surely have plenty of laughs, show each other funny antics we’ve discovered, and enjoy an experience that only Lego can offer, making memories that are truly one-of-a-kind.
