Today, Fox introduces their fresh streaming platform named Fox One, which is garnering attention due to its relatively steep pricing. With streaming services becoming a primary method for television and movie consumption, more and more platforms are popping up. However, this increase in choices often corresponds with an uptick in costs.
During an earnings call on August 5th, Lachlan Murdoch, CEO of Fox, announced that the new service, Fox One, would cost $20 per month. The service offers live broadcasts from Fox channels such as Fox Sports and Fox News. This timely introduction coincides with significant events like the NFL season, MLB playoffs, and Fox’s college football program, Big Noon Saturday.
Murdoch stated that Fox One is primarily aimed at individuals who have never subscribed to traditional pay-TV, often referred to as “cord-nevers.” Previously, we’ve made it clear that our expectations for Fox One subscribers are limited, and our investment in this venture will be proportionate to these future aspirations. Additionally, he hinted at offering package deals to make the service more appealing to potential viewers.
Murdoch noted that while the conventional cable package still offers great worth for numerous individuals, Fox One caters to those who lean towards streaming or have no interest in traditional cable subscriptions.
Murdoch also emphasized the significance of Tubi, Fox’s complimentary streaming service, which caters to about two-thirds of its user base who don’t have traditional TV subscriptions. “Tubi appeals to a vast market yearning for premium content at no cost,” he stated. “In addition, Fox One will cater to another crucial demographic: viewers who prefer a paid service with targeted offerings encompassing all Fox brands.
Just wanted to clarify that when you subscribe to Fox One for $20 a month, it doesn’t come with Fox Nation or B1G+. You can add those on for an additional fee, and if you bundle Fox One and Fox Nation together, it’ll cost you $24.99 each month.
Fox One intends to utilize AI technology to craft an individualized viewing experience, seamlessly merging live broadcasts with on-demand content. Rupert Murdoch clarified that the initial costs will be low due to the existing availability of the content across Fox’s television channels.
In his conversation, Murdoch emphasized the difficulty in striking a balance when it comes to packaging their content and channels for consumers – aiming to provide them with the most convenient bundle, while simultaneously keeping Fox One as a specialized service tailored for the cord-cutter audience.
Pete Distad, CEO of Fox’s direct-to-consumer division, expressed enthusiasm about the impending launch, stating, “We can’t wait for the launch of Fox One in just a few weeks! Our goal is to provide top-notch live news, sports, and entertainment content under one roof, catering specifically to cord-cutters and individuals who haven’t subscribed to pay TV before. It’s a fresh and exciting way to experience Fox content.
