PlayStation 5 Price Hike Hits the U.S.

Sony has announced that starting August 21, the prices of PlayStation 5 in the U.S. will increase due to what they refer to as a tough economic situation.

New PlayStation 5 Prices

The updated recommended retail prices for consoles are, which sees an increase of $50:

  • PlayStation 5 (Disc Model) – $549.99 (previous price $499)
  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $499.99 ($449)
  • PlayStation 5 Pro – $749.99 ($699)

Accessories will keep their current prices, and Sony has not announced increases in other regions.

Sony’s Statement

Isabelle Tomatis, in her role as Vice President of Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, detailed the reasoning behind the decision, which she shared on the PlayStation blog.

In line with numerous international companies, we’re adapting to an economically tough situation. Consequently, we’ve found it necessary to raise the suggested retail price for the PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States, effective from August 21st.

Industry Context

At present, there’s increased pricing across gaming industries as they confront economic challenges from tariffs and broader market factors. Notably, Nintendo has bumped up the cost of their original Switch console, while Microsoft has postponed announcing the price for their upcoming ROG Xbox Ally X handheld, attributing this decision to shared economic concerns.

What Stays the Same

  • No changes for PlayStation 5 accessories.
  • No price changes announced for markets outside the U.S.
