- The “Summer of Sours” program is a new marketing strategy that uses cultural collaborations to sell a lifestyle, not just a product.
Last week, I jet-setted myself to Kentucky, first boarding a flight that whisked me off to Louisville. From there, I hopped into a ride and journeyed on to Bardstown. My goal? To immerse myself in the artistry of glass maestro Dale Chihuly at Maker’s Mark. His exhibition is running through December, and I was thrilled to join one of the available tours!
At Star Hill Farm, Chihuly’s stunning glass installations added an extraordinary touch. One of these installations was a massive chandelier made from twisted glass, suspended above barrel rows in the main cellar. This captivating work, with its vibrant shapes, stood out against the minimalist ambiance of the cellar yet managed to make a strong impact. Chihuly’s art, which transforms fire and sand into seemingly living glass sculptures, was showcased within a property dedicated to renewal. The artwork subtly reinforced the distillery’s broader initiative highlighting how whiskey production can contribute positively to environmental conservation.
Maker’s Mark is putting significant resources into sustainable farming practices across Star Hill Farm, focusing on rejuvenating soil quality and enhancing biodiversity. This isn’t just a casual endeavor; it’s a committed initiative. Recently, Amanda Humphrey, the Manager of Advocacy & Experiences at StarHill Farm, gave us a brief tour and showed us the land and eco-friendly procedures. She highlighted their collaboration with the University of Kentucky in preserving American white oak trees. Through this partnership, the distillery has built the world’s largest collection of American white oak at Star Hill Farm, aimed at protecting and researching a key species vital for the production of Kentucky bourbon.
During our journey, we encountered the Maker’s Mark “Summer of Sours” initiative. This unique experience was a joint effort between Maker’s Mark and the host shop, Big Night. The goal was to reinvent the whiskey sour as a summer essential by offering a guide for innovative hosting methods, complete with fashionable cocktail recipes and specially selected glassware.
Stepping out from Starhill, it was evident that Maker’s Mark is aiming to be more than just a distillery. The captivating Chihuly installations weren’t mere art pieces on their own; they blended seamlessly with the farm’s regenerative efforts and the innovative program, creating an immersive experience that showcased a brand striving to redefine bourbon’s role in modern culture from my gamer perspective.
