Notable arrests often capture public interest, and among the gravest allegations that prominent individuals may encounter are those of armed robbery. The cases detailed here involve figures in sports, music, and acting, ranging from dismissed charges to convictions and imprisonment. Each entry highlights essential details such as the timeline, location, accusations, and results.
I’ve compiled a list that focuses on confirmed allegations or charges related to armed robberies and home invasions with a firearm. The results span a broad spectrum, ranging from plea bargains and dropped cases to lengthy imprisonments. The information is derived from court documents and trustworthy news outlets.
O. J. Simpson
In September 2007, O.J. Simpson encountered two memorabilia dealers in a hotel room in Las Vegas. According to authorities, the group involved carried weapons, leading to charges of armed robbery and kidnapping involving weapons.
As a film enthusiast, I found myself following the dramatic legal saga of O.J. Simpson back in 2008. In Nevada, a jury found him guilty on all twelve counts linked to that fateful incident. He was sentenced to serve up to 33 years in prison, with a glimmer of hope for parole after serving nine years. True to this break in the prison walls, he was granted parole and walked out of prison in 2017.
Adam Hicks
In January 2018, former Disney actor Adam Hicks was taken into custody in Burbank following a series of armed robberies on the same hillside neighborhood, where several instances occurred close together and were reported to have involved a firearm by the victims. The police linked these incidents together.
Later, Hicks admitted to one charge of robbery without contest. In July 2021, he was given a five-year prison term, and in March 2022, he was released on parole early, having earned credit for the time he spent in custody prior to sentencing.
Tekashi 6ix9ine
In November 2018, federal authorities accused rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine and some of his companions with racketeering crimes, which included allegations related to an armed robbery on April 3, 2018, that took place near West 40th Street and 8th Avenue in Manhattan. In this robbery incident, they claimed weapons were displayed.
In 2019, the rapper admitted guilt for numerous federal charges under a plea bargain. He received a sentence of two years in prison and probation in December of that same year. Victims who were robbed at gunpoint in April 2018 subsequently filed a civil lawsuit against him later on.
XXXTentacion
In 2016, Florida law enforcement accused XXXTentacion of several charges, including armed home invasion robbery and aggravated battery using a firearm. According to court documents, an incident took place during a break-in at a residence, with stolen items and a weapon allegation being included in the case.
In the end, he admitted to no guilt for the robbery and assault charges related to that specific incident and was given probation along with additional conditions. As for other criminal cases, they were still ongoing at the time of his death in 2018. However, the armed robbery case itself had previously been settled through a plea agreement.
Kodak Black
In the year 2016, Kodak Black found himself under arrest in Florida, facing charges that encompassed armed robbery and wrongful confinement. The arrest ensued after accusations emerged involving a victim being detained during a theft incident, as well as the use of a firearm.
Over the course of the following year, numerous charges from his case file were either dropped or lessened, while others were settled through plea bargains involving probation. Subsequent violations occurred as well. The 2016 armed robbery incident is just one part of a more extensive criminal history that encompasses additional federal firearm and drug cases post that timeframe.
Pooh Shiesty
Law enforcement officials in South Florida have accused rapper Pooh Shiesty of involvement in a shootout that occurred during a deal on Bay Harbor Islands back in October 2020. The original case was based on an allegation of armed robbery, which stemmed from a transaction involving sneakers and marijuana. Two individuals were reported to have sustained gunshot wounds in the incident.
Afterwards, he admitted his guilt in a federal court regarding a firearm-related conspiracy linked to the event and received a sentence of 63 months in prison in 2022. This federal plea brought an end to the case, bypassing a state trial for the initial armed robbery charges.
Chief Keef
In 2017, the law enforcement of Los Angeles apprehended Chief Keef, following a report by producer Ramsay Tha Great about an armed break-in at a house in Tarzana. The report stated that several individuals had broken into the residence, stolen property, and threatened their victims with a weapon.
In the end, the prosecution decided not to pursue the case further, thus it was dismissed. Although no conviction was obtained, the initial arrest was documented as a suspected armed burglary at someone’s home, which allegedly involved a home invasion.
Adrien Broner
In early 2016, boxer Adrien Broner faced accusations of holding up a man with a gun outside a bowling alley in Cincinnati, following an argument over gambling. A grand jury brought charges against him for aggravated robbery and felonious assault. When he failed to appear initially, a warrant was issued for his arrest.
The investigation came to a halt when the accusing witness didn’t appear in court. Consequently, the prosecution dropped the charges, and it is noted in the records that the accusations of armed robbery did not lead to a verdict.
Jelly Roll
Country singer Jelly Roll openly discusses a gunpoint robbery he carried out in his teenage years. Subsequently, he faced charges for aggravated armed robbery, and it’s evident from court documents that he was convicted due to this incident.
He spent over a year imprisoned, followed by several years on probation upon his release. More recently, he has spoken about this experience in various interviews as part of his efforts to secure a pardon in Tennessee, aimed at lifting travel limitations due to the previous conviction.
Danny Trejo
In the 1960s, prior to his acting career, Danny Trejo served a significant amount of time in California prisons for charges such as armed robbery. It’s often shared that during this period, he honed his boxing skills and started working on changing his life while behind bars.
In the year 1969, Trejo got released, and he quickly landed jobs on movie sets starting off as a boxing instructor and eventually transitioning into acting. Notably, prior to gaining fame in films and TV, Trejo had a criminal past involving armed robberies which date back to his younger days.
Sonny Liston
The heavyweight boxing champion, Sonny Liston, spent time in the Missouri State Penitentiary after being found guilty of first-degree robbery in 1950. Reports from his era and subsequent biographies suggest that he had previously been involved in armed robberies, including a gas station hold-up involving a lethal weapon.
In prison, Liston mastered the art of boxing and was later granted parole, leading him to pursue an amateur boxing career that eventually became professional. However, his record shows numerous instances of arrests, with a previous armed robbery case being one of the offenses he was convicted for prior to his boxing success.
Tay-K
As a movie buff, I’d put it this way: Back in 2016, I found myself in hot water for a home invasion robbery in Mansfield, Texas. This incident resulted in a tragic loss of life. During the robbery, firearms were involved, and later on, I was also charged with additional counts of aggravated robbery that allegedly occurred inside the same residence.
In 2019, a Tarrant County jury found him guilty of murder and aggravated robbery and sentenced him to 55 years. Later, in 2025, he was convicted for another murder committed during his time on the run. However, the initial conviction was based on an armed home invasion robbery.
DeAndre Baker
In May 2020, DeAndre Baker, a cornerback for the New York Giants football team, was implicated in an armed robbery incident that occurred at a party in Miramar, Florida. A court filing made in August detailed four charges of robbery involving a firearm, claiming that various pieces of jewelry and cash were stolen during the event.
In November 2020, the prosecution chose to drop all accusations against Baker, explaining that the reliability of the witnesses was questionable and an associated extortion arrest involving the lawyer of the alleged victims raised concerns. Consequently, Baker was found not guilty in relation to armed robbery charges, and he returned to the NFL without any criminal conviction stemming from this case.
Quinton Dunbar
In May 2020, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar was implicated in a case from Miramar and faced accusations of armed robbery along with DeAndre Baker. Documents like witness affidavits and subsequent filings suggest that he was present at the contested location, although his specific role is still under question.
It was declared by Broward County prosecutors by August 2020 that there wasn’t enough evidence, so Dunbar wouldn’t be indicted for the charges. Consequently, he was taken off the NFL’s exempt list and didn’t undergo criminal proceedings concerning the alleged armed robbery.
Express your opinions regarding these instances in the comment section, and identify the cases that you believe continue to be misconstrued by the public today.
