HOME ALONE Director Says a Reboot Would Be a Mistake (And We Totally Agree)

Currently, there’s an abundance of reboots and revivals of well-known series that are popular nowadays. Some people might view this as a positive development, while others may find it less appealing. However, I believe we can all concur that certain franchises might be better off untouched due to their incompatibility with modern times. One such franchise is Home Alone, which boasts four movies, but the first two, featuring Macaulay Culkin, are the ones that truly resonate with audiences. These films have become cherished holiday classics, adored by multiple generations. Recently, Culkin expressed interest in a new Home Alone project as long as the storyline was plausible. On the other hand, Chris Columbus, the director behind the first two films of the Home Alone series, suggests that they should remain in the ’90s.

In my opinion, ‘Home Alone’ feels like a unique, unrepeatable experience rather than an event on a clock. It seems misguided to try reliving the magic we created 35 years ago. I believe that it’s best if we just let ‘Home Alone’ remain as it is.

Didn’t I mention? He’s spot on! A significant factor in the success of Home Alone was the technology and societal standards prevalent during its time. Back then, with no functional phone lines and the absence of cell phones, young Kevin found himself alone at home, unable to contact his parents. In today’s movies, he could easily reach out to someone with a phone or even message his parents on social media like Facebook.

Today, the carefree attitude some adults had about Kevin being home alone wouldn’t be acceptable due to increased parental vigilance over children. A significant part of the appeal of the first movie lies in its setting, cultural references, and overall aesthetic. And, it’s hard not to feel a pang of emotion watching the NYC skyline with the Twin Towers from the second film.

Additionally, there’s a sparkling and distinct appeal that young Macaulay infused into his role which is hard to recreate. Frankly speaking, it would be best to let Home Alone remain frozen in time, approximately 35 years ago, and avoid any attempts at a reboot.
