Due to the astonishing global box office success of Superman, reaching over half a billion dollars, it came as a shock for many viewers when they learned that the movie was making a swift transition to digital release just 35 days following its initial cinematic premiere.
As per Gunn’s statement, he shares the same surprise, and he clarifies that the reason for the release of “Superman” on Friday has nothing to do with any anticipated box office issues, but rather it is all linked to the upcoming season 2 of “Peacemaker”.

Gunn Says Peacemaker Is the Reason
Addressing Ebaster, Gunn expressed his sadness at the abbreviated theater run. However, he clarified that this decision was due to some scheduling issues.
Actually, things got a bit complex, but essentially, it’s all thanks to ‘Peacemaker’. I had initially believed that ‘Peacemaker’ would be released next month. Unfortunately, various factors beyond our control led to the change in its release date. In an effort to ensure as many people as possible could see ‘Superman’, we decided to release ‘Peacemaker’ earlier, even for those who missed the theater screening beforehand.
Timing Around Peacemaker Season 2
As per Gunn’s announcement, the second season of “Peacemaker” will debut on HBO Max on August 21st. This early digital release allows fans to refresh their memories about Superman prior to the series launch.
Gunn has earlier referred to the upcoming season as a follow-up directly linked to “Superman,” suggesting that an early home release could be a strategy to ensure the greatest number of viewers are prepared for the next installment of DCU’s “Peacemaker” Season 2.
As a devoted cinephile, I must admit my disappointment about Superman’s box office performance, currently falling short by around $600 million. This seems to have raised eyebrows among fans, leading them to speculate that the digital release might be due to underwhelming box office numbers rather than the anticipated Peacemaker Season 2. It’s plausible that the studio made this move, considering the potential audience for Superman pales in comparison to Peacemaker.
Interestingly enough, those fans who are engrossed in Peacemaker may have initially flocked to see Superman. To add salt to the wound, John Cena’s screen time in the movie is rather limited.
Superman Box Office
By Tuesday, the global earnings of Superman amount to approximately $583 million. Domestically, that figure is around $334 million, while internationally, it’s about $249 million.
As of Tuesday, Superman has grossed around $583 million worldwide. In the U.S., his earnings are approximately $334 million, and overseas they are roughly $249 million.
It’s well short of The Batman ($772.2M)and even Man of Steel ($670M) from 12 years ago.
