According to James Gunn, it’s not advisable for children to watch the follow-up to the Superman movie as he describes it as being comparable to the R-rated second season of Peacemaker, featuring John Cena, which will premiere on August 21 on HBO Max.
It seems Gunn presents a playful, child-oriented version of Superman initially, yet labels the subsequent one as inappropriate for children.
Make it make sense.

What Did James Gunn Say?
Back in July on Threads, a fan asked Gunn about a Superman sequel. He replied:
Could you clarify your use of the term ‘direct sequel’? To me, Peacemaker Season 2 seems to be a clear continuation or follow-up of the original series.
At Wednesday night’s Peacemaker Season 2 red carpet premiere, Gunn doubled down, telling THR:
As a movie enthusiast, let me share my thoughts on the seamless transition from “Superman” to the adult-oriented series, “Peacemaker.” While “Superman” sets the stage, it’s essential to understand that this isn’t intended for young audiences. Instead, it serves as an introduction to the characters and plotline of “Peacemaker,” which plays a crucial role in establishing the rest of the DCU within this season.
There are numerous guest stars and familiar faces from “Superman” making appearances throughout “Peacemaker.” To be honest, I can’t think of a project I’ve enjoyed more than this season of “Peacemaker,” and I eagerly anticipate fans getting the chance to see it.

The Box Office Context
Gunn’s movie version of Superman has been underperforming domestically and disappointing abroad. It was made available for digital viewing only 35 days following its premiere. Now, according to Gunn, the sequel will be unsuitable for children.
Coming up in cinemas next is the movie “Supergirl”. Previously, Superman’s conclusion saw Supergirl labeling him harshly. Given Superman’s current performance at the box office, how successful is it expected that Supergirl will be?
Frankly, I’m finding it increasingly challenging to keep up with the creative direction for the DC Universe these days.

What’s Next From James Gunn?
Gunn refers to Peacemaker Season 2 as a follow-up to Superman, but he’s also scripting another film starring David Corenswet’s character, the Man of Steel. However, he emphasizes that this isn’t Superman 2.
“Superman has a major role. It’s not Superman 2,” Gunn said in July.
At the premiere held on Wednesday, Gunn mentioned: “I’ve completed the initial draft for the next installment in what I refer to as the ‘Superman Saga.’ The outline is complete, which signifies a thoroughly developed plan. I’m currently working on it and aim to start production on it soon, not too long after today.
