At THE SHOPHOUSE right now, Bobby Mills’ solo exhibit, titled Charred, is ongoing. This exhibition represents Mills’ second solo showcase, displaying his latest collection crafted from charred English burr oak – an uncommon and aesthetically striking timber, whose intricate grain patterns mimic the turmoil of a fossilized tempest.
In a humble studio in North Devon, Mills crafted each piece, capturing the essence of the surrounding landscapes – grand dunes to the west and age-old oak valleys to the north. For the first time, he utilized his distinctive charring technique on burr oak, sourced from trees that weathered centuries of gradual growth. Working intuitively, Mills sculpted each piece to mimic the wood’s inherent curves, creating chairs, stools, and objects that blend delicate charred aesthetics with lasting substance.
The charred surfaces are carefully cleaned and polished using natural wax, resulting in topographies of fissures, shadows, and fluid textures. This process not only safeguards the wood but also amplifies its tactile and aesthetic intricacy, making ordinary furniture into artistic contemplations on erosion, tenacity, and renewal.
Bobby Mills’ Charred will remain on view at otherthings by THE SHOPHOUSE until August 20, 2025.
