Star Trek Now ‘A Priority’ At Skydance-Owned Paramount

Following the completion of the Paramount merger, Skydance aims to revitalize Star Trek – here’s to hoping they succeed!

In response to years of less than satisfactory content, Dana Goldberg, currently serving as co-chair at Paramount and chair of Paramount Television, emphasized that “Star Trek” holds a significant importance throughout the entire company.

During the initial press conference organized by the newly appointed leaders, this statement was made in Los Angeles, shortly after the studio underwent a significant acquisition and restructuring.

Significantly, following the merger and its completion, the new company’s shares have experienced a significant increase, approaching a jump of about 50%.

Skydance’s Star Trek Plans

We get word via Deadline about Skydance’s Star Trek plans.

For approximately ten years, starting from the release of ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ in 2013, David Ellison’s Skydance Media has been deeply connected with the Star Trek franchise, sharing both fiscal and creative bonds with it.

Currently, Ellison is now serving as CEO for the recently established Paramount, which is affiliated with Skydance Corporation. According to Deadline, this means that Star Trek will now be internally managed and directly supervised within this new company.

It seems that reports suggest Alex Kurtzman and his production company, Secret Hideout, may no longer be involved in their current contract when it ends next year. What’s unclear, though, is whether Skydance’s recent comments during the press event only apply to the Star Trek movies or extend to the streaming shows that Kurtzman has been working on as well.

Paramount is now opting to finance major franchises like Star Trek, Top Gun, and Transformers independently, without involving external partners for profit-sharing. This move grants Skydance complete creative control and allows Paramount to retain all potential financial benefits generated by these significant franchises. It’s unclear whether this change applies to the Star Trek streaming series as well.

What’s in Development

According to the report, two Star Trek films are actively in the works:

  • Original Character Film: Directed by Andor’s Toby Haynes, written by Seth Grahame-Smith, with Simon Kinberg and J.J. Abrams producing. This version introduces new characters, a new crew and narrative direction.
  • Kirk and Spock Return: Another project reunites the classic ensemble with Abrams producing again, and Steve Yockey on script duties.

Bigger Picture for Paramount’s Film Slate

As a dedicated cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the dynamic duo, Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg, have sketched out an exciting plan. They aim to release around 15 movies annually in theaters, with a lofty ambition to escalate this number to 20 in the near future. Among the projects they’ve earmarked for priority are the anticipated sequels like “Star Trek,” sharing the limelight with other highly-anticipated films such as “Top Gun 3” and “A Quiet Place Part III.

They additionally affirmed a move towards producing movies intended for theaters (such as Section 31) rather than streaming exclusives. Their primary emphasis is now on traditional film releases and significant intellectual properties. The aim is to gradually increase the quantity of content for our streaming platform. This could potentially mean more Star Trek series, given that multiple producers are reportedly proposing fresh ideas to Skydance.

As per Kurtzman, “Strange New Worlds” currently spans over two seasons, while “Academy” is also anticipated for two seasons. This implies that we won’t see any new Star Trek shows from Skydance before 2027 at the very least.
