The film titled “Thunderbolts” has concluded its time in theaters, and unfortunately, the final earnings are disappointing – extremely disappointing. This Marvel Studios collaboration ends up being the second-poorest box office performer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), barely surpassing “The Marvels.
When adjusted for inflation, Thunderbolts ranks second-worst both domestically and worldwide.
It’s office: The New Avengers has disassembled.
Thunderbolts’ Final Box Office
According to Box Office Mojo, the movie Thunderbolts wrapped up its box office stint last Thursday, having played in cinemas for a total of 98 days.
- Domestic: $190,274,328 (49.8%)
- International: $192,162,589 (50.2%)
- Worldwide: $382,436,917
To put things into context, several Marvel films from their initial Phase 1, despite being made with less money, drew larger audiences when ticket prices are accounted for in today’s terms (as shown below). Essentially, this indicates that a greater number of people watched these movies compared to Thunderbolts.
The Marvels Still Holds the Bottom Spot
Despite evading the MCU’s most disappointing box office position, Thunderbolts managed to do so merely by outperforming The Marvels slightly. However, it is important to note that The Marvels earned $206.1M globally – significantly less than Thunderbolts – but when adjusted for inflation, both films stand alone in a class of underachievement.
We also know both The Marvels and Thunderbolts failed to reach their target audiences.
Marvel’s Box Office Problem
It’s no longer an isolated incident that Marvel films are underperforming at the box office; instead, it seems like a consistent trend.
It seems that Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, is making some changes in direction. Based on recent hints, it appears that Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds, will be incorporated into movies like ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’. This move suggests an attempt to infuse established box office success into the upcoming major event films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Deadpool to the Rescue
As a dedicated movie buff, I must admit that it’s been challenging for me, and likely others, to fully immerse ourselves in the characters introduced predominantly through Disney+ shows like those in “The Marvels” and “Thunderbolts,” as Kevin Feige himself has acknowledged.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can’t help but feel the rush of excitement when I think about Deadpool strutting back onto the big screen after his blockbuster collaboration with Wolverine. With a billion-dollar success under his belt, this charismatic anti-hero is undeniably a crowd-pleaser. His unique blend of humor and action is sure to inject an electrifying energy into the upcoming Avengers movies, not just entertaining us but also boosting ticket sales like never before!
Should Feige’s strategy prove effective, “Avengers: Doomsday” might just be the movie to break the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s recent string of less successful films. Conversely, if it fails, Marvel Studios could encounter an issue even more challenging than the one they faced with the development of “Thunderbolts”.
