As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled about the recent merger between Skydance and Paramount. It seems like we’re on the brink of some exciting new Star Trek ventures! The rumors are swirling, and one intriguing prospect is a reimagining of the original series, which, honestly, I’m not sure everyone’s clamoring for. However, there’s another idea that’s got me hooked-the return of Scott Bakula in a new Star Trek: United series! This spin-off promises to continue the story from where Enterprise left off. Can’t wait to see what unfolds!
There’s talk that Alex Kurtzman’s contract with Paramount might be expiring, given years of unfavorable responses from fans and disappointing ratings. If this turns out to be true, Skydance is poised to consider fresh concepts for the Star Trek franchise.
Star Trek: United details
It’s possible that Scott Bakula might return to the Star Trek universe, taking on the role of President Archer, according to a series proposal by the former producer of Enterprise, Michael Sussman.
Sussman, known for his work on Star Trek’s Voyager (10 episodes) and Enterprise (22 episodes, where he also acted as producer for over 70 episodes), has disclosed that he and Bakula have been nurturing this concept for several years.
In my perspective, I’d be thrilled to delve into the world of “Star Trek: United,” formerly known with a humorous nod as “Star Trek: Archer.” This series takes me on an intriguing journey, focusing on my post-Starfleet life as I step into the role of President of the United Federation of Planets. The narrative is richly woven, blending elements of political intrigue akin to “The West Wing,” the suspense of shows like “Homeland,” and the diplomatic finesse of “The Diplomat.” Set amidst the tumultuous early days of the Federation, it promises to be an engaging blend of drama, politics, and personal relationships.
As a devoted fan of the galaxy far, far away, I found myself inspired by a tiny yet intriguing detail hidden in the “Enterprise” episode titled “In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II.” In this captivating episode, a future database offered a glimpse into Captain Archer’s life post-Starfleet service. Little did I know that this minor canon detail would eventually sprout into an entire new series!
I’d love it if our series could have the impact on Star Trek that Andor had on Star Wars. It would be an opportunity to present mature narratives centered around grown-up characters, portraying these stories in a gritty, authentic manner.
Why It Hasn’t Happened Yet
Approximately a few years ago, Sussman presented the concept of Star Trek: United to Alex Kurtzman’s production company, Secret Hideout. The executives found the idea appealing and even explored it further with decision-makers at Paramount, but the proposal encountered a halt. At that point in time, Paramount was scaling back on streaming investments, and there were apprehensions about potential overlap with the forthcoming Starfleet Academy series.
Ever since then, I’ve been part of an ongoing process where Sussman and Bakula have been polishing the idea. They even shifted the backdrop from Earth to the planet Babel, a place initially presented in The Original Series, to give it a unique identity distinct from Academy.
Why Skydance Could Change Things
Since Skydance has taken over Paramount, Sussman thinks the moment might be ideal for resurrecting the proposal. The new CEO of Paramount, David Ellison, has expressed a commitment to boosting investment in unique streaming content, and other Star Trek creators, such as Akiva Goldsman from Strange New Worlds, are already discussing fresh concepts (the TOS reboot).
Sussman indicates that he and Bakula are prepared to submit a comprehensive plan for an entire series, should the opportunity arise. Given Bakula’s popular standing among fans and his past association with Paramount, the prospect of him spearheading a mature, politically-focused “Star Trek” series could hold significant appeal not only for devoted fans but also for streaming viewers.
