The upcoming Henry Cavill Highlander movie may not be the only revival in the works.
Based on recent news, it’s possible that a fresh Highlander series may emerge after the upcoming movie remake. Given that United Artists (UA) owns the complete rights, this could indicate that Amazon MGM Studios might consider extending the franchise on Prime Video or MGM+.
Universal Studios (UA) obtained all rights for the ‘Highlander’ franchise from Lionsgate. This means they now have authority over the upcoming movie remake, but it also paves the way for more projects, such as a potential television series. If a series does materialize, it might stem directly from Chad Stahelski’s film and potentially revive the Duncan MacLeod character and aspects from the well-known Adrian Paul TV show.
Drawing From the TV Series
Stahelski has mentioned that the upcoming movie draws some inspiration from the Highlander television series, which ran from 1992 to 1998. This show centered around Duncan MacLeod, a 400-year-old immortal who is related to Connor MacLeod (played by Christopher Lambert) from the original film. Throughout the contemporary world, Duncan engages in deadly battles with other immortals, decapitating them as it’s the only method to kill such beings. The story also delves into Duncan’s past through flashbacks.
The series significantly broadened the universe of Highlander, going beyond the initial film. It introduced fresh Immortals, intricate backgrounds, and a broader perspective on history and lore, including the concept of The Watchers – a clandestine group responsible for monitoring Immortals. With Cavill’s movie aiming to develop a “more intricate and profound world,” a connected series could provide an opportunity for these concepts to evolve even more extensively.
Currently, there’s only talk about a possible Highlander series due to Deadline’s article mentioning Dave Bautista as Kurgan. With Universal Pictures (UA), Amazon MGM Studios, and Stahelski all involved in reviving the franchise, it seems that the immortal characters could return to battle once more on television, extending the Highlander universe.
The film featuring Henry Cavill as the Highlander begins production in September, with no confirmed release date yet.
