Over several years, the ‘Harry Potter‘ movie series held audiences spellbound with its enchanting universe, fascinating characters, and heartfelt storylines. However, in the most cherished franchises, tiny mistakes can occasionally sneak past-continuity issues, oversights on sets, or costume blunders that seem glaring once spotted. For devoted fans, these instances serve as a humorous yet endearing glimpse into the movie-making process’s inner workings.
In this magical realm, there’s a sprinkling of oversights, from minor wardrobe malfunctions to gaping plot inconsistencies. Some are discreet, requiring a sharp eye or a rewind to reveal them; others are so glaring that you’ll ponder how they slipped past the editors. Here are fifteen ‘Harry Potter’ blunders that, once noticed, will forever linger in your mind.
Harry’s Suddenly Short Tie
In a particular scene, I found myself admiring the well-tied Gryffindor tie hanging gracefully on Harry’s shirt. Just a moment later, without any apparent reason, it appeared significantly shorter – almost giving off the illusion that the tie had magically shrunk between takes. This abrupt change in length disrupts continuity and leaves one wondering if the tie was secretly enchanted with some mysterious power!
In some films, discrepancies in costumes might arise due to various takes being shot on distinct days, with wardrobe particulars sometimes getting neglected. Such inconsistencies can be quite noticeable to keen viewers and temporarily disrupt their immersion within the scene.
The Vanishing Glass in the Great Hall
At a banquet, a glass set before one character mysteriously vanishes and reappears at various points throughout the scene. One instant it’s brimming with pumpkin juice, the next it seems to vanish completely, leaving no sign of its presence-yet it resurfaces again in later footage.
This type of vanishing trick is typically a common oversight in continuity, frequently occurring due to reshoots or changing the arrangement of set elements between filming sessions. Although minor, once noticed, it becomes something that’s always apparent.
Dudley’s Ever-Changing Hair
Initially, Dudley Dursley is depicted with a distinctive, rounded, bowl-shaped hairstyle. However, in the same series of events, his hair appears longer and styled differently, giving an impression that a significant amount of time has elapsed, perhaps even enough for a full night’s sleep.
Maintaining hair consistency can be challenging during extended shooting periods, and it’s evident that in some cases, scenes shot several months apart were joined seamlessly but not always with perfectly matched hairstyles.
Hermione’s Jumper Swap
In the outdoor setting, you’ll find Hermione dressed in a warm, pink sweater. However, just a brief moment passes and she mysteriously switches to a brown sweater, giving no hint that she took the time to swap her attire.
This change in clothing choices indicates that scenes were possibly filmed on separate days and then combined later, leading to a noticeable wardrobe shift occurring within the scene itself.
The Mystery Hand on Harry’s Shoulder
During a game of Quidditch, Harry receives a congratulatory pat from a teammate. In one frame, it’s evident that the friend’s hand is resting on Harry’s right shoulder. However, in the following frame, the same hand is found on Harry’s left shoulder without any motion shown in between.
Confusion in directions is frequently due to inconsistencies during the editing process, and it can be quite surprising how much they stand out once spotted.
The Disappearing Scar
In many movie scenes, Harry’s distinctive lightning-shaped scar is instantly recognizable, yet on occasion, it seems to subtly disappear or become less noticeable. Occasionally, the positioning of the scar appears somewhat inconsistent as well.
Such discrepancies in makeup could be attributed to varying lights, camera perspectives, or quick touch-ups during scene changes. However, given its significant importance to the character’s portrayal, such differences are noticeable.
The Suddenly Empty Plate
In the grand Great Hall, there’s a sight of Ron, seemingly enjoying a mountainous portion of food on his plate. However, in the following shot, the plate appears completely empty – an oddity considering that Ron hadn’t yet had a chance to take even a single bite.
Food consistency can be remarkably difficult to maintain because props tend to get switched or replaced during different takes. However, in this case, the contrast is so obvious that it jumps right out at you.
The Extra in Jeans
In a single Leaky Cauldron scene, there’s a bystander, dressed casually in contemporary denim pants and a shirt, who seems noticeably incongruous amidst the magical atmosphere of the wizarding world.
Occasionally, background performers might be missed during a thorough costume inspection, leading to humorous historical inconsistencies that sharp-eyed viewers often notice right away.
The Moving Cutlery
Throughout an intense dialogue, the fork on the table shifted its placement numerous times amidst slices. At one instant, it was nestled by the plate; in the next, it was situated at a dramatically altered position.
Minor adjustments in positioning props might seem insignificant to the crew, yet during a conversation, these subtle changes can become quite conspicuous.
Harry’s Glasses Without Lenses
In certain close-ups, Harry is seen without lenses in his characteristic round spectacles, possibly to prevent glare during shooting. Although it’s a slight change, it’s noticeable if you pay attention.
In many films, you’ll often encounter a technique where seemingly filled glasses appear as empty frames. However, once you notice this deception, it can be quite challenging not to spot them during subsequent viewings.
The Vanishing Bench
In the following sequence set in a courtyard, the bench situated at the back of the characters mysteriously vanishes without a trace in the subsequent shot. Considering the camera angle, it seems implausible that it was relocated within the storyline.
In different scenes or shots, alterations might lead to visual inconsistencies, which are particularly evident in tranquil outdoor environments.
The Reappearing Book
During their chat, Hermione accidentally lets a book slip from her hand onto the table. In the following scene, you can see the book back in her grasp for a brief instance, but soon after, it’s back on the table once more.
As a keen cinephile, I can’t help but notice how continuity errors can easily go unchecked during filming, only to stand out like a sore thumb once the scenes have been seamlessly stitched together.
Harry’s Changing Shirt Collar
In one particular sequence, I found myself subtly adjusting my shirt collar – sometimes tucking it underneath my sweater, other times flipping it over it – as the camera angles changed. Although it’s a minor point, this detail is quite noticeable in the scene.
A change in costume often occurs because an actor, unaware, alters their attire during breaks between filming scenes, causing differences that become evident on the screen.
The Vanishing Necklace
In certain scenes, Luna Lovegood is noticed wearing an unusual necklace. However, when the camera view changes slightly, the necklace appears to vanish. Yet, just a while later, it reappears again.
In my opinion, minor discrepancies in accessories can sometimes originate from reshoots or swift changes during filming, but when it comes to unique pieces like Luna’s jewelry, they are hard to overlook.
The Wrong Eye Color
In certain close-up shots, Harry’s eyes might appear slightly varied between shades of blue or green, due to differences in lighting and digital editing. This subtle change in eye color is intentional for the character, yet it can sometimes create an interesting visual effect.
The variations in color are often caused by fluctuations in lighting and digital adjustments, yet for those familiar with the original aesthetic, it can be challenging not to notice these discrepancies.
