Weapons Review: Must See Movie For Horror Fans

Recently, I watched the movie “Weapons” not too long ago. From my response video, it’s clear that I thoroughly enjoyed it.

When it comes to this movie, I always advise people not to pay attention to reviews or watch clips and trailers online. Instead, just make sure to go check it out for yourself.

I was left with a “HOLY SH-T!” reaction.

That said, after seeing Weapons, come back and check out my thoughts below.

Note: Spoilers follow (not direct ones).

As a passionate moviegoer, I dived straight into watching “Weapons” without previously viewing any clips or trailers, having only known it revolved around some missing children. I believe this approach enhanced my overall cinematic experience.

Zach Cregger’s latest work, titled “Weapons”, serves as a sequel to the widely acclaimed film, “Barbarian”. To be frank, while it appears everyone is praising “Barbarian”, I personally didn’t enjoy it. The movie contains certain scenes where characters engage in actions that I find hard to tolerate, often referred to as “stupid behavior”. For further insights on this aspect, you may want to read my review for “Jurassic World Rebirth”.

I’ll say I like Weapons A LOT better than Barbarian.

In my perspective as a movie reviewer, while “Weapons” steers clear of characters engaging in brainless behavior, certain scenes seem to lack the nuance they deserve. For instance, it’s hard to imagine Julia Garner’s character forgetting to lock her car before parking it near that house, given the relentless pursuit she was under in the town.

Or consider this scenario: If eighteen children vanish mysteriously, wouldn’t it be odd if the only child left began to walk to school independently and do his own shopping? It seems that neither Cregger nor any of the production team have personal experiences with children.

What else was troubling? Ah, a police cruiser is parked outside the residence. It’s puzzling that they wouldn’t have known he went missing or failed to check in, given this situation. They didn’t show any sign of him checking in, but perhaps, SPOILER might have compelled him to do so.

The house, entirely draped in paper on its windows, appears unremarkable to the police.

The home, where every window is shrouded by paper, seems unnoteworthy to the police.

These paraphrases aim to maintain the original meaning while improving readability and naturalness.

With many horror movies, including Barbarian, you have to suspend your disbelief. I get it.

In a more conversational style, the sentence could be rephrased as:

“I feel that Cregger could have developed the story in ‘Weapons’ a bit more, perhaps by omitting the portrayal of police brutality and the gay themes. However, I must acknowledge that Cregger effectively incorporated the police brutality element into the movie’s plot, and it adds depth to the narrative. Additionally, while there is some LGBTQ+ content, it’s minimal, and one of the scenes featuring these characters is quite engaging.

In simpler terms, I have little to criticize as the film’s weak points didn’t distract me in any way. On the contrary, the strong aspects of the movie greatly compensated for those instances.

The narrative initially moves at a leisurely pace, deliberately so, but gains momentum as it progresses. It subsequently transitions into pivotal scenes that are skillfully handled, and if you persevere to the end, there’s a satisfying payoff waiting.

There’s some gore (woah!), and there’s some humor to counter the horror. It’s a great mix.

The music is exceptionally good. If you pay attention, you’ll notice rhythms that seem to echo your own heartbeats subtly. It’s well executed. Kudos on the composition. I thoroughly enjoyed it. A great match for the context.

Talking about it, isn’t it fantastic that Josh Brolin was cast in this production rather than Pedro Pascal? His portrayal of the distraught father was exceptional. Julia Garner delivered a remarkable performance as well, and Amy Madigan truly shone in her role.

Zach Cregger also gives us a great ending. I’m not spoiling it. Just go watch it.

The Verdict

As a thrilled fan, let me share my thoughts on the chilling horror masterpiece, “Weapons”. While it occasionally falters, overall, it packs a punch and doesn’t disappoint. The ensemble cast is exceptional, the music is gripping, and once the narrative tightens its grip, it won’t let go.

There were moments where logic could have been stronger, and a few instances seemed more about making a statement than driving the story. Nevertheless, these flaws didn’t detract significantly from the overall experience.

The film is hilarious, gory, nerve-wracking, intelligent, and a must-see in theaters. On my scale of 10, “Weapons” earns a resounding 9! I can’t wait to see what director Cregger comes up with next – bring it on!
