Disney is adopting a strategy similar to Netflix and other major streaming platforms, choosing not to disclose their subscription numbers for Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+.
The organization has decided to stop disclosing figures regarding paid subscriptions and Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) for these particular services, as they consider these metrics to be “not as significant when assessing the success of our operations.
Commencing from the first quarter of Disney’s fiscal year 2026, which spans October to December 2025, Disney will cease providing details about subscriber counts and Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) for Disney+ and Hulu. Similarly, starting from the September 2025 quarter, ESPN+ subscription numbers and ARPU will no longer be disclosed.
In a communication to investors, Disney’s CEO Bob Iger and CFO Hugh Johnston discussed some alterations. They stated that since they started providing details about the number of paying subscribers and average revenue per user (ARPU), their Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) strategy and the overall business environment have significantly changed. Consequently, they intend to make adjustments to how they report financial figures for their Entertainment and Sports divisions.
The company wants its financial reporting to better match how it now runs its businesses.
Despite ceasing to disclose subscriber figures, Disney has assured that it will still share updates concerning the profitability of its Direct-to-Consumer entertainment sector. The executives further explained, “Our future reporting will be more in line with shifts in the media industry, the distinct characteristics of our integrated resources, our operational methods, and will mirror how we assess the advancement and success of our strategic undertakings.
Disney’s streaming sector continues to thrive, as evidenced by the company’s Q2 2025 report showing a 6% rise in streaming revenue and a profit of $346 million. By June’s end, the total number of subscribers for Disney+ and Hulu combined had surpassed 183 million, with an additional 2.6 million users joining compared to the previous quarter. Specifically, Disney+ gained 1.8 million new subscribers, reaching a total of 128 million, while Hulu experienced growth of 800,000 subscribers, bringing its count up to 55.5 million.
In the future, specifically Q3 of 2025, Disney anticipates an increase of more than 10 million subscribers for both Disney+ and Hulu. This surge is primarily due to Disney’s expanded agreement with Charter Communications. However, despite this significant overall growth, Disney forecasts only a slight uptick in the number of Disney+ subscribers during this period.
This change in reporting strategy indicates that Disney is now prioritizing overall profitability over just subscriber numbers and revenue per user. In other words, they’re looking to highlight their financial success as a whole, and how well their streaming strategies are adapting to the current market conditions. The details were disclosed in Disney’s latest quarterly earnings report, which was made public on Wednesday.
