To mark Yancey Richardson Gallery’s 30th anniversary, they are hosting an extraordinary artist-curated group exhibition, entrusting leadership to the very talents who have shaped its history and reputation. Founded in Soho in 1995 with Sebastião Salgado’s inaugural showcase, Yancey Richardson Gallery has since moved to Chelsea and produced over 290 exhibitions, becoming a significant player in contemporary photography. Artists like Salgado, Zanele Muholi, and Mickalene Thomas have benefited from the gallery’s support in launching their careers.

For the special 30th anniversary event, named “Celebrating 30 Years“, the artists were asked to consider shared artistic influences and select pieces created by their peers. This way, the exhibition showcases collaborations such as David Alekhuogie selecting Thomas, Lynn Saville choosing Olivo Barbieri, Rachel Perry picking Jared Bark, and Muholi deciding on Tseng Kwong Chi. By doing so, it provides a platform for intriguing conversations and common themes across various artistic styles and age groups.

From the day we first opened our doors in 1995, our gallery has consistently dedicated itself to fostering and celebrating photography in all its forms, from renowned veterans to emerging voices. Over the past three decades, both photography and public perception of it have undergone significant transformations, but I’ve made it my mission to ensure that our gallery serves as a platform where these changes – where the very essence of history -can be experienced, felt, and engaged with.

She notes: “I’d like to express my gratitude to the artists who have given us their artistic legacies. Their work not only stimulates us to perceive and contemplate in unique perspectives, but also serves as a recurring inspiration that highlights art’s ability to aid us in comprehending our current era.

The anniversary group exhibition is now on view through August 15.
