Remake of Tom Cruise’s Sci-Fi Megahit Starring Ice Cube Debuts with 0% Rotten Tomatoes Score

In 2025, we have a science fiction thriller called “War of the Worlds” that takes an innovative route by narrating its tale solely via screens and digital devices. This film is adapted from H.G. Wells’s classic 1898 novel, “The War of the Worlds.” Rich Lee directs this production, with a screenplay penned by Kenneth A. Golde and Marc Hyman. The main cast includes Ice Cube, Eva Longoria, Clark Gregg, Andrea Savage, and others.

On July 30, 2025, I had the opportunity to watch a movie released by Universal Pictures on Amazon Prime Video. Regrettably, it didn’t strike a chord with many viewers. As of now, it’s receiving zero percent approval from critics based on ten reviews and a mere twelve percent approval rating from audiences, after over 250 ratings. Despite the small number of critical opinions, it seems that the scores may not see significant improvement as more feedback rolls in.

The narrative unfolds around Will Radford, a Department of Homeland Security agent involved in a global surveillance initiative. In this role, he assists FBI agents in pursuing a shadowy cyber-threat known as “Disruptor.” Simultaneously, catastrophic meteors strike various parts of the world, and gigantic machines emerging from these impact sites begin attacking mankind. Radford allies with an old NASA acquaintance to uncover that these incidents are in fact a covert alien invasion.

The central concept of the film was to employ the “screenshare” technique, depicting scenes exclusively via computer and mobile devices, giving a contemporary edge to an age-old tale. At first, Universal Pictures appeared intrigued by this innovative method, yet it appears they may ultimately find themselves disappointed with their decision.

The movie, according to reviews, suffers from weak scripting and an uneven flow. Critics widely agree that it represents one of the most disappointing efforts to bring this story to the screen in recent times. Viewers struggled to enjoy it due to its lack of both entertainment value and cohesive cinematic structure.

It’s noteworthy because of all the attempts to adapt this story, this is the worst one.

The movie adaptation of War of the Worlds is being criticized as poorly structured and unevenly paced, with some viewers even going as far as to consider it one of the weakest films of this decade thus far.

Austin Burke

In this modern take on the thriller genre, the narrative unfolds solely via computer screens and digital gadgets. The filmmakers intended to reimagine H.G. Wells’ timeless tale for the technology age, yet they fell short not just in providing entertainment but also in creating a genuine movie experience.

Patrick Beatty

Other than what could have been an interesting enough angle… the surrounding movie just sucks.

Jeremy Jahns

Without successfully generating any genuine tension through its ill-conceived tricks, this modern take on H.G. Wells’ sci-fi masterpiece grows increasingly absurd as it unfolds.

Todd Jorgenson

As a cinephile, I must confess that the notion of a screen-based storytelling technique initially intrigued me. However, the execution left much to be desired. The film failed to captivate with its narrative or maintain my interest. Instead, it dragged on and became an uneasy viewing experience.

Ultimately, the 2025 adaptation of “War of the Worlds” is widely regarded as a dismal flop. Although it aimed to modernize H.G. Wells’ timeless story for the technological age, it failed to hit the mark entirely.
