Over the weekend, “Avengers: Endgame” premiered, leaving many spectators puzzled with unresolved queries. Subsequently, directors Joe and Anthony Russo, as well as writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, have shared insights on possible plot inconsistencies. Their discussions also included responses to fan questions, shedding light on discarded and unused concepts and sequences within the film.
In the aftermath of “Infinity War”, it was unclear how to handle Thanos in “Avengers: Endgame” until a creative mind proposed the idea of killing him off. Upon considering this idea, they discovered that it was a viable solution.
In each city, a memorial similar to the one in San Francisco, engraved with countless names, was intended to be showcased as well.
Initially, they planned for Thor to commence his journey in The Avengers: Endgame with a vengeful mission, but they later recognized that he’s perpetually driven by revenge and consistently falls short, leading to the emergence of the character known as ‘Fat Thor’.
In the film “Infinity War,” it’s acknowledged that there was a point when Banner and Hulk were finding harmony, resulting in Smart Hulk, but they admit this happened at an inconvenient time as everyone else was struggling. For the sequel, “The Avengers: Endgame,” they scripted scenes depicting fusion through gene-splicing in a lab, but ultimately chose the method shown in the movie (my note: It seems they didn’t draw inspiration from comic books for the creation of Professor Hulk; instead, it appears to be more of a mental transformation).
They thought about incorporating a Hawkeye archery sequence from Infinity War following The Snap, but it didn’t fit because Hawkeye wasn’t actually in the movie. Joe Russo suggested showing this scene before Avengers: Endgame instead.
They confirm Captain Marvel is in The Avengers: Endgame less than some people thought she would be:
Indeed, Captain Marvel appears relatively sparingly in “Endgame”, contrary to some expectations. However, our narrative isn’t about that; instead, it focuses on the original Avengers grappling with grief and reaching an end, with Captain Marvel serving as a dynamic new addition to the team.
In the battle on Titan during Infinity War, they attempted to utilize The Living Tribunal, but everyone reacted to it with a puzzled or confused expression, as if questioning its presence.
Wow, it’s remarkable that he has three heads! Such an anomaly suggests a complex, multifaceted structure in our universe. Introducing such a detail might be overwhelming for some readers, and I believe it warrants a more subtle or gradual introduction.
They also say Feige is still considering using The Living Tribunal.
Kevin Feige came up with the idea of time travel.
Kevin McFEELY (Feige) once expressed his desire to explore time or make use of the Time Stone. This sparked discussions among us about what the most unusual thing to do with time could be, without disrupting the movie’s flow.
MARKUS and the team then pondered, “Really? We’re considering time travel?” It wasn’t until we started considering our character lineup that we realized Ant-Man hadn’t been utilized yet. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (M.C.U.), there’s a theory about time in the Quantum Realm that we can tap into, using a character we haven’t used before. We found a way to do this without resorting to cheating or breaking the rules of our storyline.
In the initial draft of The Avengers: Endgame, it was not planned to revisit the first Avengers film, but instead head to Asgard. There, an undercover Iron Man, equipped with a stealth suit, would engage in combat against Heimdall, who possesses the ability to perceive him.
Thor was going to have long scenes with Natalie Portman.
Initially, the scene featuring Peter Quill from Guardians of the Galaxy on Morag was intended to be much larger and more majestic. However, it turned out to be quite complex.
McFEELY The scene took place underwater! It was an interesting idea, but it was simply too large a scene for Thanos and his daughters to join at the appropriate time. Therefore, we went back to when Peter Quill was present. And we discovered that if you can hit him in the face, it’s funny, and I still think it’s funny.
As a die-hard cinephile, I found myself making a beeline towards the iconic Triskelion – the nerve center of S.H.I.E.L.D, on a mission to secure the elusive Tesseract.
Another scene involved somebody going to get into a car and drive to Doctor Strange’s house.
Joe Russo expressed curiosity, asking, “Why do we need to watch this film when we could be watching Avengers? Let’s find a way to make it happen.
Rather than featuring Robert Redford, they scripted scenes for Nick Fury and even a variant with Maria Hill instead.
Concerning the climactic fight, an original scene was penned where all the protagonists were in a trench conversing, but they found this approach unsuitable and visually awkward. As a result, it was left out of the film.
In this scene from McFEELY’s work, there was an interruption in the intense battle, causing 18 characters to ponder their next move. Each one proposed a different action, creating a chaotic and unnatural dialogue that seemed more like orders than a genuine conversation. MARKUS points out that during such a critical moment, they had to find cover for a discussion, which was challenging given the ongoing battle. It wasn’t like a polite World War I setting where pauses were possible.
They thought of bringing back Hank and Janet Pym in suits.
Concerning the possibility of Marvel Netflix characters, such as Daredevil and Luke Cage, appearing in The Avengers: Endgame, there was a concern that not many viewers might have been familiar with these characters or their series. It sounds like they may have been skeptical about it.
McFEELY We’re planning on presenting these five characters (or more). Given that many people have watched numerous movies, are we actually going to assume they’ve subscribed to Netflix and watched enough of those shows so they react with excitement when they see them?
MARKUS It could cause issues with the storylines. If all of them were snapped away or appeared earlier, it would mess up the timelines. The only character who transitioned from TV to movies is Jarvis, portrayed by James D’Arcy in “Agent Carter.
It’s stated that they didn’t have the rights to employ the Fox-Marvel characters (such as Silver Surfer, Galactus, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and so on) legally.
As a movie enthusiast, I delve into the reasons behind Tony Stark’s funeral and why Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow, didn’t have one. Additionally, I ponder over why it wasn’t feasible to resurrect the Black Widow using the Gauntlet.
MARKUS Tony has a funeral, while Natasha doesn’t. This is partly due to Tony being a well-known public figure, and Natasha remaining mysterious throughout. It might not be fair or accurate to give her a funeral. The main question surrounding it is one posed by Thor on the dock: “We have the Infinity Stones. Why can’t we revive her instead?” However, as McFEELY puts it, that’s the eternal dilemma – you bring her back, you lose the stone.
In another scenario, it was proposed that Hawkeye would perish instead of Black Widow. However, the visual effects producer objected strongly to this, stating, “You can’t do this to her.
Tony Stark dead at the end was always the outcome.
Cap was always going to have a happy ending.
They say there is “a great Moon Knight movie to be made, but I don’t know what is.”
Update: Deleted Katherine Langford scene is revealed.
