This indie comic shop series by Cheyenne Ewulu (also known as Cheyenne the Geek) was brought to life through a successful Kickstarter campaign. The story revolves around a group of friends trying to keep their Los Angeles comic bookstore, Oh Em Gee Comics, afloat amidst tough competition from digital platforms and big box stores. They’re an eccentric bunch, sometimes stumbling but always determined, ready to go the extra mile to save their beloved store. It’s a series that truly resonates with us geeks, as its characters seem remarkably familiar and relatable. In today’s world, there’s a growing need for light-hearted tales featuring Black characters. Regrettably, the story mirrors the struggles faced by many real-life comic shops trying to survive in the current era.
In this production, Ewulu depicts Stephanie, a meticulous group leader who’s fallen short of her Nigerian parents’ expectations by not pursuing software engineering. Her team consists of Keith Hendricks (Zeno Robinson), an imaginative gamer with stylish graphic T-shirts, Dominique (Shanae Cole), a fashion-forward individual with a tendency to be flighty, and Connor (Grayson Niles), the unexpected blend of a nerdy fraternity member. It’s truly heartening to witness a project like “The Comic Shop” receive financing and coalesce so harmoniously in a trailer.
I’m thrilled to share some exciting news with fellow admirers like myself! Luckily, we won’t have to wait too long before getting a glimpse of the highly anticipated series, The Comic Shop. Mark your calendars for August 29, as it will make its debut on Awkward Virgo TV’s YouTube channel. Can’t wait to join you there!
