In terms of aerial stunts on screen, Superman has certainly evolved significantly since George Reeves leaped out a window in the 1950s. The improvements are even more noticeable when comparing it to Christopher Reeve being lifted by wires in the 1970s. Today’s advanced visual effects technologies have made it possible to create scenes like the Volume, where Clark can be shown flying at supersonic speeds with greater ease. Recently, Superman director James Gunn shared a video detailing how they filmed David Corenswet’s flight scene away from the Fortress, performing barrel rolls in mid-air. James Gunn filmed the specific scene on the sets at Trilithi Studios, Georgia, where movies like Spider-Man: Homecoming, Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Endgame were also shot. Specifically, he filmed the plates to create the Antarctic landscape that conceals Superman’s fortress in Svalbard, Norway last year, in July 2024. This demonstrates the time it takes to perfect such intricate scenes. Early versions of this scene, featuring a slightly off-looking Superman, were shown in the first Superman trailers but were later modified.
It’s well-known that contemporary blockbuster films excessively employ Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI). Yet, this underscores the fact that a human actor is often crucial to make scenes appear authentic, especially when viewed on a large screen. Of course, there are exceptions such as the CGI-rendered flying sequences in Superman’s movies. However, it’s reassuring that filmmakers like James Gunn don’t solely rely on this technique. Currently playing in cinemas, David Corenswet portrays Superman in DC Studios’ Superman, offering a realistic take on the Man of Tomorrow.
