The initial teaser trailer for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, released by Paramount+, hasn’t received a favorable response.
On YouTube, there are currently 21,000 disapprovals versus only 6,200 approvals for the trailer, suggesting that a significant number of fans may not be supportive.
Noteworthy to mention, Skydance is set to take over Paramount, and they’ve announced that they’ll halt all ongoing DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives at Paramount. There’s buzz suggesting that the entire Paramount Star Trek series might be terminated, with Skydance potentially rebooting it instead.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is expected to have two seasons prior to being terminated. Based on the trailer, it seems that they anticipated the cancellation and focused more on incorporating current social issues (wokeness) before the show gets canceled. You can watch the trailer below.
Series Info and Cast
Starting in early 2026, the latest installment of “Starfleet Academy” will debut, where a fresh group of cadets are being prepared to serve as Starfleet officers. This series marks Paramount’s tribute to the 60th anniversary of “Star Trek”, and it is produced by CBS Studios.
The show features Academy Award-winning actress Holly Hunter portraying Chancellor Nahla Ake, commander of the U.S.S. Athena who is also half-Lanthanite. She heads an eclectic group of fresh characters.
- Sandro Rosta as Caleb Mir, a troubled orphan cadet
- Karim Diané as Jay-Den Kraag, a Klingon hopeful in the medical track
- Kerrice Brooks as Sam, a first-of-her-kind alien cadet
- George Hawkins as Darem Reymi, a wealthy aspiring captain
- Bella Shepard as Genesis Lythe, daughter of an admiral
- Zoë Steiner as Tarima Sadal, a Betazoid with political ties
The characters from the series “Trek” who are making a comeback include Tig Notaro as Jett Reno, Robert Picardo as The Doctor, while Oded Fehr, Mary Wiseman, Gina Yashere, and Paul Giamatti will appear in either recurring or guest appearances.
Why Fans Are Rejecting It
Although Paramount advertises Starfleet Academy as “thrilling,” fans appear hesitant. Many criticisms center around the trailer’s mood, which emphasizes young adult themes such as “first romances” and “growing friendships.” This focus on emotional development is seen by longtime fans as inconsistent with the franchise’s historical character.
Enhancing the doubts among fans is executive producer Alex Kurtzman, whose past Star Trek productions, namely Discovery and Strange New Worlds, have caused a divide within the fan community.
One user commented with over 400 likes on YouTube, saying “What makes this trailer feel like it’s a teen drama?
In a post featuring more than 500 shares, it is stated that the creators amplified all aspects that previous fans disliked in the new Star Trek series. Such a daring choice was made.
The Setup
The series unfolds at the legendary Starfleet Academy in San Francisco, where we meet the latest Federation vessel, the U.S.S. Athena. The principal antagonist is Nus Braka, portrayed by Paul Giamatti, who has connections to a cadet and poses a danger not only to the Academy but also to the Federation as a whole.
