It seems that a refined remake of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, developed by Bethesda and Virtuos, has surpassed nine million players, which is almost equivalent to the population of Norway. PCG’s Harvey Randall shares this information with me. This also implies that there’s a strong desire within us to revisit our childhood days. It’s a shame I reside in England when there’s so much vacant space in Norway’s fjords, hinting at a wish for more room over there.
Last Friday, Bethesda shared on social media that they had reached their 90th milestone, accompanied by a sweet piece of artwork featuring the character of the Adoring Fan and his distinctive hairdo. The post expressed surprise and delight at the multitude of individuals who have ventured to Cyrodiil to gather Nirnroot, slay 12 Rumare slaughterfish, and engage in various activities other than the main questline.
Dear Heroes of Kvatch, Arch-Mages, Grand Champions, Banishers of the Blackwood Company, and Stealthy Gray Foxes who also listened to the whispers of the Night, thank you for joining us on these extraordinary journeys. 💛

In a somewhat humorous manner, it’s intriguing that Bethesda highlights Betty’s completion of all guild questlines but neglects to mention becoming the Champion of Cyrodiil, or completing the main quest. Todd Howard is well aware that you haven’t yet bestowed the Amulet of Kings upon Jauffre. He’s in on it and seems a bit disheartened by this oversight.
It appears that Oblivion Remastered is estimated to be the third highest-selling game of the year in the U.S., but as always, the impact of Game Pass complicates this assessment. Since many of the nine million players may be accessing the game through their subscriptions, the sales figure doesn’t tell the whole story. Nevertheless, it’s quite impressive for a game that has managed to retain its original quirky appeal, despite being 19 years old.
Although it still has some distance to cover before it can match the popularity of Starfield, it’s important to note that this game had a successful launch, reaching six million players on its debut day. Moreover, in November, they announced that the number of players surpassed 15 million as well.
Bethesda has been slow in updating Oblivion Remastered, a sluggishness that might have worsened following the 300 layoffs at Virtuos this month. However, given the phenomenal success of the game, it’s reasonable to speculate that they are already considering their back catalog and salivating at the prospect. The likelihood of Fallout 3 Remastered seems almost certain, and who knows what follows? A renewed chance to release Skyrim again? A refreshed version of New Vegas? Maybe even Morrowind, despite its superfluity? The possibilities are endless when you can sell millions of copies of a game.
