Peter Dinklage Debuts Gruesome Mop-Wielding Superhero in The Toxic Avenger Unrated Comic-Con Preview

On Thursday, Peter Dinklage entered Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con, revealing a monster wielding a mop. As a former cast member of Game of Thrones, he now stars in The Toxic Avenger Unrated – an audacious reboot of the 1984 bloodbath cult classic. Fans were given an exclusive sneak peek at the movie’s unrestrained violence.

Peter Dinklage portrays Winston Gooze, a man struggling financially as a janitor, who transforms into the grotesque protagonist Toxie following an encounter with hazardous waste. During the panel, Elijah Wood, Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, and director Macon Blair, along with producer Lloyd Kaufman (creator of the original movie), shared a sneak peek at what Blair described as a “gooey” yet “sweet” modern take on the story.

From toxic waste to mutant hero

As reported by People, Dinklage stated that accepting the role was an “easy yes” due to Kaufman being a significant inspiration for him over time. Reminiscing about his past, the actor shared memories of watching the original production on Betamax in New Jersey, and being enthralled by its raw humor and environmental satire.

In the remake, Winston’s metamorphosis into Toxie is triggered by a gruesome chemical mishap – this part was partially depicted during the presentation, albeit with edited graphic violence and beeped-out cursing. Despite this, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (who voices the character) disclosed that stunt performer Luisa Guerreiro portrayed the mutated Toxie in full makeup and prosthetics.

In my own words, I’d say, “I find it intriguing to acknowledge that more than three-quarters of what people see as my performance isn’t actually me. She meticulously observes every movement I make, capturing the essence of me in a way that even I can’t match.

Sincerity beneath the slime

The movie is marketed as featuring extreme violence, hinting at a grisly practical effect with a head stuck in a car engine, but surprisingly, the discussion veered towards sincerity. Elijah Wood, who assumes the role of villain Fritz Garbinger, commended the film’s inventiveness and the heartfelt connection between Winston and his son Wade, played by Tremblay.

The younger actor confessed that he had to feign not being entirely smitten with Dinklage during filming. For Blair, the challenge was to portray the original’s madness and allure without simply replicating its storyline, as reported by Variety. The Unrated version of The Toxic Avenger will be released in theaters on August 29.
