PROJECT HAIL MARY Reveals New Look at Adorable Alien Rocky at San Diego Comic-Con

During this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, the event ventured into deep space, a journey fans of Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary had been eagerly anticipating from Amazon MGM Studios. The studio shared insights about their adaptation featuring Ryan Gosling during their panel, and they unveiled some delightful new footage of Rocky, his charming interstellar co-star.

Guests at the Hall H panel for Project Hail Mary had an exceptional experience this year during the ultimate nerd festival. Amazon MGM Studios unveiled four sneak peeks from the movie, including the film’s first five minutes that show Ryan Gosling’s character Ryland Grace waking up perplexed in space. Another clip showcased a humorous and educational flashback involving Sandra Huller’s Eva Stratt on Earth. In the third preview, the bewildered astronaut’s zero-gravity antics were halted by the appearance of an enormous, imposing alien spacecraft outside his own.

Among the amusing and suspenseful moments in those scenes, the panel’s most captivating moment occurred during the final clip. It showcases Ryan’s (Ryland) interaction with the movie’s most appealing character, Rocky the alien. In this scene, Gosling’s character drifts through a peculiar rock formation towards an extraterrestrial spacecraft. Similar to what we saw in the film’s initial trailer, a mysterious hand, resembling stone and having two fingers, appears. This time, it picks up miniature versions of both Ryan and his vessel. Then, Rocky signals for his human counterpart to depart and return to his ship.

Although the studio hasn’t shared the footage or a formal photo yet, they have confirmed that Rocky is indeed faceless. However, this doesn’t hinder Rocky’s ability to express emotions.

Indeed, Rocky bears an entirely otherworldly resemblance, unlike anything human. Yet, only those who’ve delved into the pages of a book can truly appreciate his striking similarities to us in the most admirable ways. The enigma behind this likeness will unfold when “Project Hail Mary” graces the silver screen on March 20, 2026.
