Persona 5: The Phantom X tier list – Every character ranked from worst to best

When a game like P5X has such a large cast of characters, it’s quite common for newcomers to seek an accessible ranking system that distinguishes the top-tier characters from those that are not as effective, especially if you’re a free-to-play player who wants to know which featured banners are worth spending your limited resources on.

Just like many games, it’s not always straightforward which characters excel; each one has unique scenarios where they truly shine. With this understanding, we’ve compiled a tier list that ranks the P5X characters most worth investing in for long-term success, taking into account their reliability across various situations.

Using the worldwide P5X, we can anticipate upcoming characters, giving us an edge. Consequently, when evaluating these units, we’ll consider not only their current usefulness in the game, but also their potential strength against the power increases of future characters.

S-Tier characters in P5X

Joker

It’s not surprising that Joker, the flagship character for Persona 5, consistently ranks as one of the top characters in the game. As P5X introduces more characters, this trend is likely to continue. His ability to deal damage is unparalleled, with potent multi-target attacks that can be enhanced by other characters. Additionally, his Rebellion Will skill grants him an extra action on most turns, effectively doubling the amount of damage he inflicts. If you come across limited-time versions of Joker, it’s highly recommended to acquire them.

Panther

In the present game version, Panther is the figure who comes closest to challenging Joker in terms of raw damage output. Fire as an element proves particularly effective due to its Burn capability, and Panther’s hidden talents and heightened awareness amplify her offensive power even more. She can unleash massive damage on all adversaries simultaneously, and when her La Vie En Rose ability is triggered, it has the potential to swiftly conclude fights.

Mirian

Mirian might see a slight decrease if more healers are introduced into the game, but currently, she’s unbeatable. Her fundamental healing capacity provides a substantial healing effect and blessing for two teammates simultaneously, enabling the entire party to start recovering health in just two rounds. With sufficient Diagnosis stack accumulation, she can instantly transform a party on the brink of death into a fully healthy one with a swift gesture.

Rin

Rin excels in applying debuffs more effectively than any other character. She manages to weaken the defenses of even the toughest enemies, simultaneously increasing their received damage. Combining her abilities with Joker’s creates an almost unbeatable duo. This is why Rin remains a crucial character to have on your team.

Puppet

In its present form of the game, Puppet proves to be an extremely potent ally, as she begins to lose her rankings when more Navigator characters are incorporated. However, what sets her apart is the scarcity of defensive options within the current roster, which significantly increases her value. Notably, she can replenish a small amount of SP for your team and fortify them with protective shields that extend your combat duration.

A-Tier characters in P5X

Fox

The unique trait of Fox being both a Tank and a Sweeper gives him an impressive strength as a character. His skillset allows him to fortify his own defenses while antagonizing opponents in readiness for fierce retaliation, a strategy that not only secures the safety of your team, but also rapidly weakens enemies. However, he falls short of being top-tier due to his vulnerability against multi-target attacks and the ineffectiveness of his abilities when faced with enemy resistance to Ice.

Flueret

Flueret accumulates numerous points due to being the sole Wind-attacking unit currently available, making him an invaluable asset because Wind is a highly beneficial offensive element, as it can inflict the Windswept status that weakens opponents. Moreover, Flueret’s Right to Strike system enhances his power over time during battle, enabling you to deal greater damage compared to most 4-star units.

Mona

As a dedicated fan, I’d say this character stands out due to his unique ability to resurrect knocked-out allies during battle, making him a top-tier choice even with the requirement of using a Highlight attack for revival. Beyond that, he excels as a party healer, providing essential support through his Morgana’s Favour ability, which can be a game-changer in critical situations. Moreover, he offers a decent amount of offensive power when needed.

Leon

Leon may require a bit of mastery, but once you get him, his potential is immense. His unique skill, Friendship Power, enhances his allies’ attacks when their health falls below 75%. This is particularly useful during challenging boss fights since it often occurs. Moreover, he can amplify this effect with his Persona abilities and strategically redistribute HP to provide shields for his teammates. To top it off, Leon isn’t just defensive; he can dish out significant Nuclear damage when the situation demands it.

Soy

Soy stands out as a potent one-on-one combatant among 4-star characters, but his true strength lies beyond just this, making him exceptionally effective. His exceptional Tank capabilities are what truly sets him apart. Enemies tend to focus on him more frequently than others, and if that’s not sufficient, he can also instigate Taunt. Whenever he uses Taunt, it triggers Desperado, a ability that restores his health after his turn. Additionally, he possesses skills that increase the maximum HP of the entire team, ensuring their safety with remarkable ease.

B-Tier characters in P5X

Closer

Currently, Closer is a strong character, but sadly, she may become one of the hardest hit by power creep as more characters enter the scene. She’s dependable when it comes to sweeping electric-based damage across the field and causing Shock to enemies simultaneously. However, with new characters arriving who can perform her role even more effectively, it won’t be long before she starts losing ground. Nevertheless, if you manage to boost her Awareness Level to 6, she can still hold her own against foes that are weak to Electric.

Okyann

Okyan’s capabilities for boosting attack power and defense are quite beneficial; however, it’s worth noting that there are several other methods to achieve similar effects without relying on her. Unlike Puppet, who ascends to S-Tier due to limited defensive choices, Okyan drops to B-Tier because offensive options are abundant. While Okyan can be effectively utilized at present, during tough battles, a defensive Navigator typically proves more advantageous.

Bui

In contrast to her Chinese P5X counterpart, Bui doesn’t stand out as an exceptionally powerful unit. Her key ability lies in launching follow-up attacks on all her allies, but this only occurs about 45% of the time, making it less than ideal for a consistent strategy. Moreover, using her action to boost that chance to 100% for a single character doesn’t seem worthwhile. However, in prolonged battles where she can be strategically positioned, Bui can deliver crucial additional damage, rendering her far from being completely useless.

Skull

Skull performs admirably in terms of a unit, yet there are others who excel more at his assigned tasks. His Rebound skill adds an interesting twist, retaliating damage to attackers with its strength increasing as his health decreases. However, the absence of a Taunt ability makes it unreliable, and it somewhat resembles Fox or Soy, but falls short in performance.

Cattle

One of the early-game units, cattle, tends to become less useful over time. His capabilities for healing and boosting attacks are beneficial, especially if you’re building a Fire team. However, as you progress in the game, you’ll find characters that perform these roles more effectively, making cattle seem unfocused and unable to fully realize his potential.

C-Tier characters in P5X

Mont

In the tutorial, Mont appears to be a dependable attacker, consistently dealing damage. However, she’s not particularly extraordinary in any way. Her capacity for follow-up attacks could save you in certain situations, but the need for careful setup due to her Ice Crystal system means you can’t always rely on this feature.

Riddle

Riddle is controversial due to divided opinions; some consider her one of the top supports in the game, while others find her stretched too thin for consistent performance. Her Childish Hearts mechanic shines in prolonged fights, yet demands careful setup to maximize damage amplification. On the other hand, her Ready for Adventure skill concentrates on enhancing healing and shield increases, but this benefit comes at the cost of requiring an additional party slot for a non-damaging healer. While Riddle’s abilities are strong, there are characters that perform her role more effectively, making it uncommon to include her in your party lineup.

Yuki

Yuki has a lot of untapped promise, yet she doesn’t quite reach her full potential in combat. Her ability to bestow shields and defense enhancements upon her teammates is valuable, particularly since these benefits aren’t commonly found among the current roster. However, her Oath skill, which provides these powerful boosts, activates at random, making it challenging to direct them to the allies who need them most strategically. While she can be effective in combination with a character like Fox, who benefits from having shields and increased defenses, her applications are rather specific or niche.

D-Tier characters in P5X

Key

In simpler terms, the issue with Key is that Panther is around, and she outperforms him in virtually every aspect. If you’re constructing a Fire-based team, Key could be beneficial since he excels at causing Burn more than Panther does. However, in any other situation, choosing Panther over Key would be the better choice.

Moko

Among all characters, Moko is the one I deeply yearn to see improved because Tomoko stands out as an exceptional Synergy partner in P5X. Regrettably, she seldom justifies the investment due to her limitations. Her Cheering You On Persona ability is potent, but the necessity for Greenleaf stacks to activate it can be irritating, and while her emphasis on causing Sleep might prove useful on rare occasions, it’s unlikely to be sufficient to transform a lost fight into a victory.

Sepia

In comparison to most other attackers within the game, Sepia is clearly outmatched. If you’re in a bind and need Curse damage but lack both Joker and Rin on your team, it might be wiser to acquire a Curse-focused Persona for Wonder and utilize that instead. The issue with Sepia lies in his slow development; he requires more than 14 stacks of his Verse system to deal substantial damage, whereas Joker could have likely defeated the enemy four times over during that period.
