Marina Abramović and Ulay‘s partnership served as their artistic medium. In 1988, they concluded both their personal and professional bond in an indelible gesture: walking along opposite sections of the Great Wall of China to meet and separate for the last time as a team. The closing of this phase brought a challenging, bittersweet conclusion, but the profound spiritual connection between them has persistently reshaped the boundaries of modern performance art.
The life and enduring impact of this artistic duo is once again in the limelight, as a new exhibition titled “ART VITAL – 12 Years of Ulay / Marina Abramović” is set to debut at Cukrarna Gallery in Ljubljana, Slovenia on their shared birthday, November 30. This showcase will be the first dedicated exclusively to their collaborative work, spanning from 1976 to 1988.
The exhibition is divided into thematic areas, showcasing the development of their work, starting with their debut performance at the Venice Biennale titled “Relation in Space,” culminating with their final performance “The Great Wall Walk” (1988). Key pieces such as “Rest Energy” (1980) and “Imponderabilia” (1977) are displayed alongside previously unseen letters, personal memorabilia, and archival materials, providing a unique, behind-the-scenes look into their joint creative endeavors.
As a gamer, I’d say ART VITAL encapsulates the grit, emotions, and intellectual depth of a duo’s partnership, marked by resilience, daring, and openness. They were intricately linked, not just to each other but also to their environment, creating an indelible bond that echoes down the years as a testament to two fearless artists who weren’t shy about putting everything on the line.
At the exhibition, you’ll find a reproduction of the “Relation Work and Detour” (1980), which was originally published by the artists. Visit Cukrarna’s website to secure your tickets for this event right away.
