Despite the fact that Battlefield 6 (temporarily known as such) is confirmed to bring back character classes, there seems to be a divide between EA and the gaming community regarding how deeply this change should revert to its roots. While Battlefield 6 is expected to offer an open weapon system, allowing players access to any weapon irrespective of their chosen class, die-hard fans of the series argue that this approach diminishes the significance of classes and they prefer weapons to be confined to specific classes, as has traditionally been the case.
Despite having just reinforced its standpoint not long ago during a development update, Electronic Arts seems to be softening its approach in this debate of ideologies: In a brief social media post, the studio declared that an imminent open beta test will include gameplay modes featuring weapon classes that are fixed, as well as ones with an open weapon system.
EA announced that in the Open Beta, players will have the option to select official game modes featuring weapons pre-assigned to each class (Closed Weapon system), or opt for a mode where all weapons are available (Open Weapons system). Additional details will be shared later.
In addition to demonstrating responsiveness to community input and thus generating positive sentiment, this seems like a shrewd decision from a development standpoint: Providing both systems concurrently enables the company to gather extensive data, which can then inform wiser choices for the end product.
The strategy in question bears a striking resemblance to an approach employed by EA in FC 26, their soccer simulation game. In FC 26, players can opt for two distinct gameplay modes: one designed for solo play, emphasizing authenticity, and another tailored for competitive online play. This dual offering aims to accommodate a diverse player base without potentially upsetting either group. However, whether this method will prove effective for Battlefield remains to be seen in the upcoming trial, which currently lacks a specific launch date.
The next Battlefield game is set to be revealed this summer with a targeted release in 2026.
