After undergoing a management buyout, The Chinese Room is now an autonomous game development studio once more. Its previous owners, Sumo Group (a subsidiary of Tencent), chose to sell the studio for an unspecified amount, as reported by GamesIndustry.
At present, The Chinese Room boasts a team of 55 individuals who are diligently working on not one but two unique intellectual properties, in addition to Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2. This highly anticipated first-person role-playing game will soon be released by Paradox Interactive, the company that holds the rights for the IP.
The most recent game released by the studio, titled “Still Wakes the Deep,” came out under Sumo Group’s Secret Mode label in 2024. This year, it received an expansion called “Siren’s Rest.” Earlier this year, it won three BAFTA awards from six nominations, further enhancing the studio’s reputation that was already established by previous successful titles such as “Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture,” “Dear Esther,” and “Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs.
Recently, Amplitude Studios, previously under SEGA’s control, has reclaimed its independence. In the year 2024, they carried out a management buyout, separating from Sega, and joined forces with Hooded Horse for the publication of their upcoming game, Endless Legend 2.
